AALoA NCAA14 Bowl Season - 2013

Its been a long an exciting season and all that's left to do is collect some swag, rep your conference and end your season on a winning note.  Oh yeah, we also have to determine a National Champion.  The 2013 season will have a User National Champion as #1 Nebraska faces off against #2 Notre Dame.  Here are some other interesting tidbits going into the Bowl Games:

- 11/12 user teams qualified for Bowl Games with UCLA being the lone team on the outside looking in.

- There will be 3 user/user Bowl Game matchups (well really just 2 due to Oregon's absence).

- Coach Eversole, after missing out on playing this year's Heisman Trophy winner, will get a chance in the Bowl game to play last season's Heisman winner.

- Coach Davis will take on his former school in the Orange Bowl.

- Notre Dame made the BCS Title Game with 3 losses and no conference championship game.

- Ohio State's loss in the B1G Title game dropped them out of a BCS Bowl as Iowa will take the second spot for the B1G in the Rose Bowl.

- It took a full season but Missouri has cracked the Top 25.

Rough end to a rough season. Georgia Tech loses the Independence Bowl to TCU 27-17 mostly due to 3 first half turnovers. Lets hope we can get it together for 2014. If I don't get fired first..

My biggest fear is losing coordinators as I don't want to start from scratch, or only have the option of hiring a coordinator that doesn't match the offense (unless I can get former Husker QB Scott Frost from Oregon).

In an emotional battle Coach Davis and his VA Tech Hokies beat the USC Trojans 35-14, and are Orange Bowl Champions!! The Hokies finished the season winning five straight games after a 6-3 start, hopefully this draws in the recruits.

Yeah Thurston is my 3rd string Center. I don't think he played a down of football unless it was one of those 2nd string sub packages late in the game for a few plays. Hilarious.

The stage was set. Two-time AALoA Heisman Trophy winner Taylor Martinez' swan song was taking place at the Rose Bowl against a surprise three loss team in Notre Dame. Coach Kelly and Coach Jeanneret have a heated past dating back to a year before. Would tempers flare once again? Or would the teams play a great game, unlike Notre Dame's 2013 showing versus Alabama where Manti Te'o's girlfriend played better coverage than he did.
Bowl Week Open NCA14PS3_56_GR_JPEG_SCREENSHOT_tzg
Notre Dame opened the game kicking.  On Nebraska's first drive, Ameer Abdullah took a play to the left, and gets lit up losing the ball, and maybe even consciousness.  ND LB Shembo scooped off the ball and raced to daylight. 7-0 ND.  Heisman Trophy winner Taylor Martinez, wanting to show off the passing skills in preparation for the NFL draft arm punted a ball deep down the seem for ND to pick it off. The Drunken Fighting Irish capitalized and Heisman Finalist GAIII ultimately plowed in from 1 yard. After 1 Quarter, ND was up 14-0.
Bowl Week Open NCA14PS3_57_GR_JPEG_SCREENSHOT_eVP
Nebraska would quickly answer though, not wanting to fall behind too far. The offense would find a rhythm, Coach Jeanneret would restrain Heisman Trophy winner Taylor Martinez' new-found Rex Grossman-syndrome (release the dragon!) and All-American Ameer Abdullah (how's that for alliteration) would score from 2 yards out. Late in the half, Notre Dame would score again. This time kicking a 51 yard FG. Down 17-7, Heisman Trophy winner Taylor Martinez would engineer a two minute drive racing down the field before connecting with TE Jake Long from the 11 yard line. Halftime score, ND 17, UNL 14 and the Irish receiving to start the half.

ND would open up the 3rd quarter with a simple field goal. And Nebraska would take the ball, and promptly give it right back to ND on a stupid, stupid, stupid play by Heisman Trophy winner Taylor Martinez where he pitched the ball to a RB being dry-humped by an Irish defender. Heisman Trophy winner Taylor Martinez saw his mistake and merely stood over the ball letting ND scoop it up. GAIII would score from 9 yards out on what else, a Counter play that ND had been and would call all night.  The 3rd quarter was not lost though, Nebraska would score a TD, Imani Cross would haul in a short pass (forward option) from Heisman Trophy winner Taylor Martinez.
Bowl Week Open NCA14PS3_58_GR_JPEG_SCREENSHOT_ICS Bowl Week Open NCA14PS3_60_GR_JPEG_SCREENSHOT_JSU
The 4th quarter is where things get even crazier.  Less than a minute into the quarter, Heisman Trophy winner Taylor Martinez would connect with Jamal Turner downfield for a 35 yd touchdown where the single high safety disappeared, and Turner got behind the 4-2-5 safety with ease. Nebraska led 28-27. From here, Notre Dame's offense got a bit too unimaginative and the Husker defense could anticipate where the ball was going before the snap based on personnel grouping alone. Despite this though, Heisman Trophy winner Taylor Martinez wanted to give the game away. Rumors exist that while not only suffering from the aforementioned Rex Grossman-syndrome, that Heisman Trophy winner Taylor Martinez also has a touch of Pete Rose-syndrome and can't go a week without gambling. Had he bet against the Huskers? With less than 3 minutes to go, all the Huskers had to do was get a first down to salt the game away while on the brink of field goal range. But no, Heisman Trophy winner Taylor Martinez audibles out of the play call, and unleashes yet another arm punt downfield for an easy interception.
Bowl Week Open NCA14PS3_61_GR_JPEG_SCREENSHOT_RxI Bowl Week Open NCA14PS3_62_GR_JPEG_SCREENSHOT_XMj
With one time out and a really good return on the interception, Notre Dame was poised to kick a field goal and win. Except, the defense held true again, jumping the same route combos and forcing Rees to scramble. Just outside field goal range, ND took a major step backwards.  A timely Jason Ankrah sack would ice the game as the Irish could not get another play call off in time. And that's how Heisman Trophy winner Taylor Martinez ends his college football career. Throwing a stupid interception late in the game, but still miraculously hoisting the crystal.

FINAL SCORE
Bowl Week Open 8727
Nebraska 28

Player of the Game
Bowl Week Open VXHJXJLKFFYHXID.20130405145754DE Jason Ankrah
For having to chase the stone footed, yet surprisingly elusive Tommy Rees around the field all night, Ankrah saved Heisman Trophy winner Taylor Martinez' ass for some pretty boneheaded plays. The game-clinching sack was a pure effort play, and makes Ankrah one of the few defensive players to win MVP status in a title game for that reason alone.

Congrats EDJ.

Michigan State holds Oklahoma State to under 150 yards of total offense as they shut out the Cowboys 21-0.

I seriously believe that MSU defense is the best I've ever played with in the NCAA series. Even better than the Texas D I had when I won the title in 12(?).

Gator Bowl Shootout
Manziel VS Hackenberg

The Gator Bowl pitted last year's best high school recruit VS last year's Heisman trophy winner in a showdown of two of college football's most promising young QBs.

Over the past few weeks, Coach Eversole gave his playbook a makeover, stripping it from many of the heavy run and read option formations, and adding more spread Shotgun formations. Hackenberg threw the ball 49 times, completing 41 of his attempts for 476 yards and 4 TDs en route to shattering school records. The beneficiary of most of those passes was Junior Allen Robinson, who caught 13 balls for 226 yards and 2TDs. Seven different receivers caught at least 3 passes on the day.

Manziel finished a nearly perfect 11/12 for 111 yards and a TD, but it was his read option game that gave Penn State the most trouble. Manziel ran for 94 yards and a TD on 15 attempts. His RB Malena added 120 yards and 2TDs

Hackenberg threw 2 interceptions, both costly, but Penn States defensive line showed up big when it mattered most, sacking Manziel 4 times and accounting for 5 tackles for loss. It was a silver lining to a terrible defensive season for Penn State.

Penn State stand out DE, Deion Barnes, sacked Manziel on 4th down, with PSU leading 49-42, to clinch the victory. Penn State goes into the offseason only losing senior MLB Glen Carson, and hping WR Robinson stays for his senior year. With several 4 star offensive recruits moving to Happy Valley, Penn State will look to outscore their opponents next season and build on the momentum from their Gator Bowl victory.

Iowa Hawkeyes Win The Rose Bowl
While Coach Steel Pitt spoke about winning a National Championship in Iowa City, those dreams were dash with a bitter defeat to eventual National Champions Nebraska.  However, that doesn't mean that this season wasn't a success by any means.  The 2012 Hawkeyes suffered through a dismal 4-8 season and the future looked bleak.  The 2013 Hawkeyes brought excitement back to Iowa City and a winning attitude as Iowa finishes their season 11-2 and winners of the Rose Bowl thanks to a 24-21 victory over Oregon.  Starting QB Jake Rudock left the game early due to a broken collarbone and his backup tried to give the game away with 3 picks (including one returned for a TD), but the running game which accounted for 145 yards, a defense that held Oregon under 300 total yards and a kickoff returned for a TD by WR Powell helped Iowa pull out the victory.
