AL 63 - Ole Miss 17

This game was pretty much over at halftime, as we jumped out to a 49-3 lead on the Rebels. Our offense was firing on all cylinders and our defense was stifling. Good showing on both sides of the ball for sure.

Nebraska defeats UCLA. Game was much closer than the score indicates.  UCLA could not overcome the turnover bug and both teams had trouble moving the ball with just a couple extended drives each.

I logged each drive during the game. So that will be my write-up.

---First Half---

  • UCLA: Rough 3 and out for Ken to open the game.
    >>Opening sack.
    >>Near safety on play 2.
    >>Huge boot by punter.
  • Nebraska:  opening drive starting in field goal range after a nice return.
Penalty brought back a huge TD run.
    Rebound for a TD pass.
  • UCLA: 3 and out.
  • Nebraska: Field Goal.
  • UCLA: 3rd drive is promising.
    >>Almost stalled due to a penalty, but #85 Brown broke a serious tackle and just gets past the 3rd down marker.
    >>UCLA then throws a pick deep in Nebraska territory.
  • Nebraska:Two plays later, Terrell #NewbyForHeisman rips off a huge TD rush.
  • UCLA: finally finds points on their 4th drive busting an inside run outside and racing down the sidelines untouched.
  • Nebraska botches the ensuing kickoff.
    >>UCLA records a Safety when the recovering player stumbles untouched into the end zone! Wow.
  • UCLA: Interception the very next play.
    >>Nebraska returns it to the house. What a crazy chain of events.
  • UCLA: 3 and out.
    >>Nebraska fumbles the punt! But recovers. Time for a benching?

---Half Time---

  • Nebraska: 3 and out to open the half.
  • UCLA: Nice 90 yard, extended TD drive.
    >>QB scrambles outside finding his WR alone in the end zone.
  • Nebraska: Interception.
  • UCLA: Interception.
  • Nebraska: 3 and out.
  • UCLA: 3 and out.
  • Nebraska: Finally finds some offensive rhythm and goes on a long TD scoring Drive.
    >>#NewbyForHeisman for TD.
  • UCLA: Interception
  • Nebraska: Field Goal
  • UCLA: 3 and out.
  • Nebraska: Kneels out the clock.

QB Stanton played the whole game, but was hardly a threat. Under 100 yards passing, he may be benched in the next game.

Mizzou Stuns No. 10 Bulldogs

No, the OTHER Bulldogs.

Missouri 24, Mississippi State 17

Mississippi State came into Week 5 with its highest A.P. ranking in decades, but fell to the unranked Missouri Tigers on their home turf.

The home Bulldogs took a 17-7 lead into halftime, and looked likely to extend their stay in the top 10 for another week. But the Missouri Tigers had other plans.

Fresh off a tough loss at Alabama, Missouri put together its most complete game of the season, dominating both lines of scrimmage from the 3rd quarter on to complete an early season sweep of the state of Mississippi.

Coach Mustard's new RB-by-committee system appears to have injected life into the Tigers' rushing attack. Sophomore RB Walter Talley, recently relegated to a bench role, rushed for a career high 8.4 yards per carry en route to 93 yards, while his battery mate Damon Dowdell added a tidy 65 yards on 11 carries.

Senior QB Trent Hosick, a first-year starter, also turned in a stand-out performance under center, completing 21 of 28 passes for 210 yards, 2 TDS, and — critically — no INTs.

More importantly, a new-look defensive line — a team strength for the last 5 years — finally found its groove, racking up 4 sacks by 4 different players, and stifling the Mississippi State run game.

The Tigers improve to 2-1 in conference play with the upset win.

Next up for Missouri: a home date against unranked Vanderbilt before a critical SEC East battle against No. 20 Georgia.
