Happy Homecoming For The Hawkeyes

Week 6 Open Esq-iowa-fans-110811-xlg

Homecoming 2013 was a success in Iowa City.  The Hawkeyes welcomed the Michigan State Spartans to Kinnick Stadium and pleased the rowdy crowd of 70,000+ with a 31-18 victory.  Michigan State received the opening kick and drove all the way down the field with a well balanced offensive attack and capped the scoring drive with a 1 yard TD run by RB Nick Bell.  The Hawkeyes, however, would respond in a big way as they scored the game's next 21 points in large part to the right arm of QB Jake Rudock.  Rudock has been up and down all year and there were rumors that he may be benched this week.  Well, if his job was in jeopardy going into the game it certainly isn't coming out of the game.  Rudock tossed 3 first half TD's and finished the game a near perfect 14/15 for 247 Yards and 3TD.  Michigan State would cut the lead to 10 in the fourth quarter following Nick Hill's second TD run but they would not get any further.  Iowa moved the chains enough to eat up the clock and essentially end the game with a 25 yard FG with 33 seconds remaining.  The loss drops Michigan State to 0-1 in conference while the Hawkeyes move to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in the B1G.  They'll have a much needed week off before traveling to the Horseshoe to take on the current #1 team in the country, the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Iowa Hawkeyes 31

Illinois Massacred Like Chief Illiniwek's Mascot Dreams Nebraska
Week 6 Open Hi-res-151124118_crop_exact
Nebraska played host to their Big Ten opening opponent Illinois. All Illinois did was blink before it was confirmed that no, Illinois is not allowed nice things.  Taylor Martinez was almost perfect on the day, strengthening his Heisman candidacy with strong showings on the ground and through the air. The Husker's Senior QB was responsible for 378 yards of total offense on only 21 plays, 9 runs and 12 passes. In the first half alone, Nebraska had put up 42 points and 350 yards of total offense before trying to call of the dogs. Martinez also is responsible for 6 TDs on the day, 3 through the air, and 3 on the ground. (Note: In user/user matchups, you still cannot Mass Sub your bench players).
Week 6 Open Com_130402_NCF_VBlog_bennett_imani_130403
Midway through the game, Coach Brown was lamenting on the lack of a true speedster at RB that could get to the edge of the defense, when bumbling, rumbling manchild Imani Cross did just that plodding his way down the sideline on a toss. The defense also came to play, sacking Scheelhaase 5 times and picking off both Scheelhaase and O'Toole a combined 3 times.  Hopefully the recruits in the stands took notice.
Final Score
Illinois 14
Nebraska 59
Next week, the Huskers have to travel to Purdue to face a Boilermakers squad infamous for spoiling top user teams in the AALoA. *cough* Buckeyes *cough* Will the Boilermakers find enough magic to topple a Husker team that's seeming gaining even more momentum as the season goes on?

UCLA struggles defensively against Utah

Week 6 Open Brett+Hundley+Utah+v+UCLA+FDI1FVIVGisl

The UCLA Bruins (1-3, 0-1) can't wait to get back to playing on their home field. After dropping a heartbreaker to the Utah Utes (4-1, 1-1), the team fell to 0-3 on the road. It was a game where the Bruins couldn't stop a fly, let alone dynamic Utah RB Kelvin York, who rushed for 190 yards and 1 touchdown. On a positive note, the Bruins were finally able to sustain long drives that ended up in 4 rushing TDs (2 for QB Brett Hundley).

The Bruins look to bounce back next week at home versus the California Golden Bears (0-4, 0-1).

Final Score
UCLA Bruins 28
Utah Utes 35

Ohio state beats NW 10-3, in a game which was more boring and tedious than the score indicates, if that's even possible...

The game featured 634 tackles for loss, and 18 passing yards... Midway through the 3rd, I actually started hoping for a disconnect..

I have a feeling once the first loss comes, the wheels are gonna come off and a multiple losing streak is coming...

Really struggling with the (not read)option... My team ai support is awesome since the team is so highly rated, but I can't seem to gain more than 2 yards on a speed or shovel option play...

I hear ya.  My offense has really been struggling this season, in particular in the passing game.  Hopefully homecoming was a turning point.

Speaking of poorly run options, I got stuffed on the goalline twice vs Michigan State and tried a Speed Option on 3rd down which was promptly picked off. lol  I couldn't even be mad at the game because it was just a bad decision on my end.

Penn State answers the question of 'Hoosier Daddy'?

Following a simulated loss to Notre Dame and a bye week, Penn State traveled to Indiana to take on conference foes Indiana.

Coach Eversole was seen whining, raging, and crying several times from the PSU sideline as Penn State allowed Indiana to throw for 480 yards and rush for 150+ with their no-huddle offense. Eventually Coach just gave up completely and turned his back while Indiana had the ball to avoid puking everywhere. Penn State still won, despite defense being impossible to play, but it was frustrating as hell.

Indiana scored easily on the first possession, and Penn States CB Amos returned the kickoff for a TD. Indiana scored easily again, forced a 3 and out, then scored easily a 3rd time to make it 21-7.

Winning 21-14, Indiana made the interesting choice to go for it on 4th and 3 from the 4 yard line which resulted in a sack and zero points. Penn State converted the missed opportunity into 7 points and tied the game going into half.

TE Kyle Carter had 2 TDs on the day

In the 2nd half, Indiana was still unstoppable and their QB was a mix of Cam Newton, Tebow, and Vince Young. Luckily for PSU, Indiana fumbled twice on completed passes and Indiana's defense is also pathetic. The teams traded scores until the end.

PSU 49
Indiana 43

Indiana QB: 480 yards, 5TD, 0 INT
PSU QB Hackenberg: 380 YDS, 4TD

Tons of receivers for both teams with huge days.

Last second, 4th down heroics vanquish Vanderbilt

Missouri 24, Vanderbilt 23

Week 6 Open Ku52-waterscelebrate.0_standard_352.0
TE Eric Waters celebrates after Mizzou's comeback win.

The Missouri Tigers stunned the Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday, securing a come-from-behind victory on a 4th and goal touchdown with mere seconds remaining.

After struggling mightily in the first half, QB Maty Mauk threw 3 TDs after halftime, including two in the 4th quarter to overcome a 20-3 deficit.
With the win, Missouri improves to 3-0 under Coach Mustard, and 4-1 overall.
The Tigers' offense looked sluggish to begin its first conference game, after dominating an overmatched Arkansas State squad a week earlier. Vanderbilt dominated the line of scrimmage in the first half, sacking Mauk twice early on and clearing huge running lanes for HB Wesley Tate (12 carries, 119 yards).
In the third quarter, Missouri cut the lead to 10, then held Vanderbilt to a FG at the 11-yard line on its next drive. Mauk would find WR Dorial Green-Beckham for a 9-yard TD with 3 minutes to go, cutting the lead to 6, then the Tiger defense forced a 3-and-out to give Missouri one chance at a 2 minute drill.
Mauk quickly advanced the ball to the Vanderbilt 6-yard line, then was set up with 3rd and goal at the 2. The next play, a Vanderbilt safety forced a big drop by WR L'Damian Washington, leaving the Tigers with 9 seconds and one play.
All of the Tigers' wide receivers were covered, but TE Eric Waters was able to find just enough space in the flat for the go-ahead score.
Injured QB James Franklin could only watch from the sideline as Mauk, a red-shirt freshman, led the team to just its second SEC road victory since joining the conference.
The effort had reporters uttering the "c-word" during the post-game press conference.
"A 'quarterback controversy?'" Mustard repeated. "I don't see any controversy here. We have two good quarterbacks, and one good healthy quarterback. When that changes, I'll let you know."
