Week 1 is now open.  I will advance the week on Sunday (5/25).

Sorry guys but it looks like I jumped the gun and advanced to the regular season Thursday morning instead of Thursday night.  I hope that doesn't effect anyone too adversely.

Again, I apologize for the mix up.

2018 Season Preview

The 2017 season ended with the Crimson Tide hoisting the BCS Trophy for the second time in four years.  Coach Denham and his Tide have been to the Title Game in each of the last four years but have alternated title game victories and if history repeats itself then this is the year another team will sneak in and claim the crown.  The big question is who will it be?  The Big Ten put the SEC dominance on hold with title runs by Iowa (2014) and Nebraska (2016), however with both teams seeing their Head Coaches move on to new challenges where will that competition for the title come from?

Coach EDJ and Coach Steel Pitt were able to build teams capable of defeating the Tide in the past but their current rosters suggest that they are in no position to make a run at the BCS Title Game this season.  COach Gruden and his UCLA Bruins have seemed to turn the corner out West coming off a PAC12 and Rose Bowl Championship so they could be ready to be that team.  However, the most likely source is within Alabama's own conference in the MIssouri Tigers.  Coach Mustard has gotten his team prepared and played the Tide tough for four years now and they believe that this is the best team they have ever fielded (aided by the #2 recruiting class).  The race for th National Title may come down to who will in the SEC.

Players To Watch

In addition to the Pre-Season All-Americans listed above, Alabama QB Chris Phillips is once again on the pre-season short list for Heisman hopefuls.  I know who the CPU feels are the players to watch but I wanted to know from you guys who are the players on your team that we should expect big things from?

It could be a proven player that is ready to have dominant season.
It could be a player that will benefit from a change in offensive/defensive philosophy.
It could be an incoming freshmen or former benchwarmer that will get serious play time due to the starter moving on.

Who are some of the guys that could shine or be called upon to lead their teams this season?

I tried to give an overview of what to look for this season in the Season Preview, but you guys know your teams better than I do.

With that said, what are some of the storylines associated with your team this season?

Syracuse Orange

The place was the Superdome in New Orleans and the confetti was falling from the skies as the Syracuse Orange had just completed an undefeated season by defeating the Florida Gators in the BCS Title game.  The Orange were on top of the college football world.  However, a lot has changed since NCAA11 as the Orange have since moved to the ACC and seen their status amongst college football's elite drop considerably.  This demise all culminated with a disappointing 2-10 season.

Enter the 2018 season.  The higher ups in western NY have reached in teh past in order to hopefully correct their future.  During the offseaosn they were able to sway former Head Coach Steel Pitt to return to the Orange.  This reincarnation of the Steel Pitt - Syracuse Orange marriage won't be easy as the roster is average and the cubbard is bare due to lackluster recruiting efforts.  In order to turn this program around, it is going to have to start on the Recruiting Trail as the Orange need playmakers and quality depth.  Coach Steel pitt is well known in the Northeast and should be able to make immediate strides in the Northeast as well as build on the Midwest relationships built while at Iowa.

Improvements in recruiting will be a big step but that won't help the Orange win any games in 2018.  With a change in scenary also brings a change in style as Coach Steel Pitt did not bring his coordinators from Iowa to Syracuse.  Word out of western NY is that Coach Steel Pitt is bringing back the smashmouth football that was widely successful during his first stint in Syracuse.  Coach Steel Pitt have to rely heavily on a pair of Fifth Year Seniors in QB Dan Carlson and RB Tyree Hartman.  Hartman is coming off a 1,000 yard seaosn and is expected to be the work horse offensively.  QB Dan Carlson is an accurate Qb who will be asked to manage the game and convert third down.  With an average OL and average WR corp this could prove to be difficult on both fronts.

Defensively, expect the Orange to move to a 3-4 defense which will be anchored by Fifth Year Senior "The Mountain" Mike Williams (6'2" 317lbs) at NT.  While Coach Steel Pitt was hired late in the recruiting season he was able to garner one quality commitment from true freshmen CB Chase Griffin.  The youngster will be thrust into the starting lineup on Day 1.  There will be some ups and downs but his ability to handle to step up in competition will go a long way towards improving the Orange pass defense.

The basic theme for the Syracuse Orange 2018 season is REBUILD.  Coach Steel Pitt will be asked to rebuild the program, rebuild the depth through recruiting, rebuild the confidence of these young men who have witnessed nothing but losing during their time at Syracuse and rebuild Syracuse's reputation as a football powerhouse.

Players To Watch

Syracuse Orange

Offense

RB Tyree Hartman (91 OVR)
6'0" 217 lbs.
Redshirt Senior

Those that have watched Coach Steel Pitt's Iowa Hawkeyes are familiar with their fast paced, no huddle attack that wasn't afraid to sling the ball around through the air.  However, the early indications from training camp practices is that the Coach Steel Pitt is bringing back a smashmouth and phsical mentality back to Syracuse.  That means starting RB Tyree Hartman can expect a heavy workload this Fall.  Hartman is coming off a 1,000 yard season and was probably the Orange's lone bright spot on offense last season.  Hartman boasts a quick burst in and out of the hole (98 ACC) as well as great ability to avoid the first tackler despite his size (97 ELU).  Whether the Orange offense can impose their will on opponents will rely heavily on Hartman's performance this season.

Defense

CB Chase Griffin (76 OVR)
6'0" 181 lbs.
True Freshman

Across college football, and pro football as well for thatmatter, we have seen increased reliance on the passing game.  Coach Steel Pitt expects to build this team on running the ball and stopping the run but in today's football you'll have to be able to stop the pass.  The secondary was not an area of strength last season but will have to improve this season.  Coach Steel Pitt was able to snag 76OVR freshmen in offseason recruiting in the form of CB Chase Griffin.  Griffin possess good size (6 feet) and speed (90 SPD) and showed in high school the abilty to play well in both man (80 MCV) as well as zone (84 ZCV).  Will the step up in level of competition be too much given the more complex offenses (57 AWR)?  The Orange defensive succss will depend on Griffin's ability to hold his own.

Season Preview
What a whirlwind this offseason brought. While Oregon State did not win the national championship. Far from it. They got an absolute coup in the HR department. Seriously, Cheryl in HR, go get yourself an ice cream cake.

Long time coach, and underachiever, Mike Reilly retired. At the last minute, OSU wooed Coach EDJ away from the titan that is Nebraska to rebuild their program.  Mike Reilly left the overall roster deficient on impact talent, but the roster is incredibly young, allowing for room to grow quickly. In the coming season, OSU only needs to sign a QB and a Punter, and their roster could still be stocked enough to play a full season. This will allow Coach EDJ to swing for the fences on impact recruits and fuel the Beaver Frenzy quickly.
Week 1 Open Oregon-state-beavers-football-2013
The offensive line at Oregon State is their greatest asset, and it's young. 80 Ovr true freshman LT Joseph Davis is red-shirting. That is serious depth. Starting LT, LG, and C are all 90+ rated players (Coach EDJ never had that kind of line talent at Nebraska). And they will be needed as 5th year Sr QB Marcus Minor will be the focal point of the offense as OSU hopes to wing the ball around the field more, and rely on the run less. His decision making is lacking, so he'll need all the time in the world to find throws.  OSU enters the season with this strategy as they are unsure if their talented defense will perform or not. So they hope to score a ton of points.

On defense, OSU appears to be transitioning from a 3-4 to a 4-3. The defensive line is stocked with strong men who can't sprint, and the linebacking corps are loaded with athletic monstrosities ready to roam the field.  While the talent is there, the fit may not be, and the defense will have to play wait and see.  The secondary is a huge question mark as only 2 players stand out, only for other reasons.  Thanks to their scheme flexibility and contributions on special teams and offense, those two players are highlighted below.
Week 1 Open 131129.mca_.ODE_.fbc_.OSU_.0795
Players to Watch:
Standout: Old Blood
CB Patrick Harrell; Jr
This man can fly (95 Spd, 92 Acc) and has a major height advantage (6'3"). The converted WR is the designated special teams ace, expected to return kicks, and play gunner on coverage. He's elusive with the ball in his hands, and can catch. He received a long look at WR, but his cover skills were sorely needed in the secondary. Expect him to see limited snaps on offense though, as he's just too electric to keep off the field.
Week 1 Open -5f956b7ca930e597
Standout: New Blood
FS Ben Cooper; True Fr
The 4* gem from Hawai'i is a jack-of-all-trades. Like Harrell, the athlete was recruited for offense. Cooper can play WR and QB. He is even slotted as 3rd string QB on the depth chart. But with a lacking secondary, Cooper will be asked to patrol the deep middle of the field. You will see him as a gadget QB though to keep the defense on edge.

Changing of the Guard
OSU carries two incredibly talented TEs on the roster with both being more than capable blockers. With the scheme change, it will be interesting to see if they find a fit. The incoming JuCo transfer WR Andrew Roth is already expected to take catches away from the TE group. And the TE's may not be athletic enough to flex out. OSU has experimented with the Jimmy Graham treatment this spring though in playing multiple TE sets with spread looks. We'll see what they roll out.

Mizzou beats UCLA in thriller

Missouri 35, UCLA 31

In a game where neither team could consistently stop the other from scoring, strangely, it was a defensive play that won the game.

After falling behind 31-21 early in the fourth quarter, Missouri's offense stormed back to take a 35-31 lead. But with more than 2 minutes on the clock, a victory was far from certain.

UCLA quickly moved the ball close to midfield, but CB Jesse Temple put a bow on what was a fantastic debut for the redshirt freshman, jumping a route on the sideline for his second interception of the game.

Redshirt Senior QB John Howard, after waiting four years for an opportunity, was stellar in his first start, completing 76% of his passes for 172 yards, 3 TDs and just one INT. He also ran for 95 yards, sparking a Tiger running attack that has the potential to be the school's best since Henry Josey graduated.

But UCLA gave as good as it got. UCLA's corners shut down star WR Clifford Wall, holding him to just 2 catches for 22 yards and stepping in front of him for a costly INT late in the game. On the offensive side, QB Thomas Ryan threw for 267 yards and 2 TDs, but ultimately, his three interceptions would prove fatal.

With the come-from-behind win, Missouri may have finally exorcised the demons of two seasons ago that found this team missing a bowl game for just the second time since joining the SEC.

"Last year was all about making it back to the post-season," Mustard said. "This year? We want a championship ring."

With a road win over a 99-rated offense, the Tigers are off to a good start.

Players of the Game

 Missouri Season Preview Missouri

If the 2018 Tigers have a weakness, it's a lack of star power. This year's squad doesn't have a Chase Daniel, Jeremy Maclin or Michael Sam. It doesn't have "the Spoon," DGB or "Frank the Tank."

This won't be the flashy 2008 squad that put up huge points en route to a No. 1 ranking before losing to Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game. Nor will it be the 2013 club that took the SEC by storm with two NFL-bound defensive linemen.

But it has a chance to be better than both of them.

Top to bottom, this year's Missouri Tigers' roster would best be described as "solid." It returns all but two starters from last year's defense, which was in the top 5 in the entire country, despite a lack of star talent.

The best player, statistically, on that squad was LE Derek Gant, who led the NCAA in sacks en route to the Nagurski award. As an 83 OVR senior with limited size and strength, his NFL prospects are bleak, to say the least — but that didn't stop him from receiving first-team pre-season All-American honors and recording a quick two sacks in his first game.

The Tigers are filled with guys like Gant on both sides of the ball. And while few stand out as NFL-caliber talents, this team also has few discernible weaknesses.

If Missouri can escape with two out of three from an early season gauntlet that includes UCLA, Alabama and an Oregon State team that just landed one of the country's top coaches, don't be surprised to see this Tiger team in January.

Players to Watch

DEs Derek Gant, Ahmad O'Neal -- Despite lacking the talent of many of his SEC brethren, Coach Mustard always seems to get stellar performances out his defensive ends. We know Gant will put up numbers, but be on the lookout for freshman Ahmad O'Neal to have a monster season opposite him. The pair combined for 3 sacks in the opener at UCLA.

QB John Howard -- The Tigers' revolving door at QB continues to turn. Can the redshirt senior take advantage of the opportunity? If not, 2018 will be another forgettable year, and Coach Mustard may have to take a look at Sophomore Matt McCauley.

Defensive Backs -- Look for this unit to have a monster season. Senior FS Anthony Fields is the star, of course, but it's the depth that should scare opposing offenses. The Tigers' 5th best cornerback is good enough to start on many teams. If Missouri's front four produces like its capable of, this unit should be able to drastically improve one of the country's worst TO differentials from a year ago.

Season Preview
The Crimson Tide come into another season ranked #1 in the nation. To say expectations in Tuscaloosa are at an all time high would be an understatement. Chris Phillips is back for his senior season at QB, after having a record setting year in which he won the Heisman. Our two defensive stars in the secondary are back for their senior year as well and have validated our switch to a 3-3-5 base defense. We know that it's a long road back to the BCS championship but that's our goal for this year.

Player To Watch: Offense
Week 1 Open Screen37
This should come as no surprise. This young man has been a absolute terror for defenses for the last four years. The skies the limit for him and we are just excited to have him on campus for one more year. If he comes close to having the hall of fame season he had last year (3000+ yards passing, 1000+ yards rushing, 70+ Total TDs), we'll be more than happy.
Players To Watch: Defense
Week 1 Open Screen38Week 1 Open Screen39
Having these two on the field at all times on defense has made a world of difference for us. We switched to the 3-3-5 to maximize their talent and they have not been disappointed. Our defensive rankings might not show it, but we have had one of the strongest defense's in the country since their sophomore year. We give up a lot of passing yards but that's because we are usually up by 21+ points and teams abandon the run to mount a comeback. They'll be tough to replace and we'll probably transition to another defensive scheme next year.

Future Impact Players: Offense
Week 1 Open Screen40
It's been awhile since we haven't had a 95+ overall player in the backfield but this young man has the potential to be one by his senior year.
Future Impact Players: Defense
Week 1 Open Screen41
This young man is stepping in to the MLB position, replacing Tim Williams who led the nation in solo tackles the past two seasons. He started last year at LOLB and showed great potential. We are confident in placing the defense in his hands.
Potential Season Story Lines

  • Is there enough offensive firepower around Chris Phillips to continue Alabama's dominance on offense?
  • This team has a host of first year starters on both sides of the ball. How will they respond to having a target on their backs week in and week out?
  • Who has the best shot at beating Alabama at home and break their nation's longest home winning streak?
  • Will Alabama go undefeated through the SEC yet again? Missouri is lurking........
  • Which out-of-conference match will be Alabama's most challenging?
  • Can Chris Phillips win back-to-back Heisman's
  • How will the offense and defense respond to having brand new coordinators?

FYI my laptop fried itself somehow during our first matchup for Week 1. So any limited communication comes from my phone or tablet, which are a pain to type long-form on. The Beavers had a 3 or 7 point late 1st half lead.

Game two was all Bama in a blowout in the rain.

AL 42 - OSU 14

The season got off to a great start as we headed to Corvallis to start the season. OSU has a new head coach, but an old rival in EDJ and there's one thing for sure. They won't be having many losing seasons as long as he's in charge.

This was a 14-14 game at half, but the Alabama defense turned up the intensity in the second half and shut out the Beavers. Chris Phillips got his Heisman campaign off to a great start scoring through the air and on the ground. Quincy Bates stepped into the lead role as WR and tied the school record for receiving TDs in a game. There are some things we need to tighten up defensively, and we definitely need more production from our HB's but I must say I'm pleased with the start to the season.
