Week 1:

Oskie-Wow-Wow Weekly Nathan-Scheelhaase-11_271
The Fighting Illini start strong, key play from Monheim, Scheelhaase, lead to the first victory of the season.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets came into Memorial Stadium thinking this was just a tune up game, due to the fact that the Illini are reeling and are still trying to rebuild as the previous coach Todd Beckman left the team in shambles, but alas left a good enough core for Coach Brown to build with. Surprisingly, this was not the case as the leaders of the Fighting Illini came to play for their new head coach and a fire was lit beneath them. A quick 3 and out forced by the Illini led to a quick score and the early 7-0 lead. Georgia Tech fired right back and scored themselves to tie the game at 7. A defensive battle began to take stage early on in the game as many drives back and forth just could not get enough offensive firepower going. The Illini broke out of this struggle to take the lead 14-7. The next drive, Mason Monheim forced a fumbled on GT QB Vad Lee and it was recovered and ran to the house by Kynard to take the lead even bigger to 21-7. Georgia Tech was not ready to give up as they fired back for 14 unanswered to tie the game at 21 heading into the 4th quarter. With the game on the line, Senior Quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase stepped up when his team needed him, delivering two huge late touchdowns to go up 35-21. An interception the next drive all but sealed the fate of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Fighting Illini start the 2013 season with a big upset that will turn some heads. It was a well played game by both sides, as there were no penalties called throughout the game. Georgia Tech will be ready to fire back at the next opponent that comes their way, just a little slip up out of the gate that will not derail their drive for an ACC Championship.

Week 2 will be the first installment of my new series in the Orange Krush Gazette called: Can't Have Nice Things Weekly; this series is where I will tell you about something bad that happens to either my Fighting Illini that was just silly, or something the other team was trying too hard during the game to do and just could not do it. Either way, it should be a fun series to start and hope you will all join me in ushering in this new era of Not Having Nice Things. See you guys in Week 2 when Akron stands in Illinois' way of a 2-0 start. ROFL

Week 3:

Illinois escapes by the skin of their teeth with a 40-36 victory over UConn. Nathan Scheelhaase was on point with his execution today, leading his team to victory. A huge goal line stand late in the 4th quarter, culminating with a sack on 4th and 3 to seal the game. Big victory heading into the bye week. Scheelhasse finished the day with 24/32 451 Yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT. Donovonn Young stepped up a little better than he has been with over 100 yards on the ground, and two TDs. The Senior WR Ryan Lankford also had a phenomental day, over 150 yards and 1 TD on 8 receptions. Houston Bates and Austin Teitsma were huge late in the game providing the pressure that the defense needed. See you guys back in Week 5 for the showdown with the Fighting Irish in Champaign.

Looks like the Nebraska blowout also crushed the school newspaper and forced them into shutdown, lol.

Haha well...it did kind of sting and so did the Wisconsin loss. The tears have been shed enough, and it seems fitting that it should make a return this week.

2013 In Review

A miraculous season, perhaps a godsend that the Illini for once, was able to have nice things. A strong 3-0 start quickly ended in a 9-4 finish, ending with a 4-3 record in user games in the first year of the gauntlet. Wins over non-conference opponents Mustard's Rage Inducing Missouri Tigers (Outback Bowl) and Truth's confusing offense of Georgia Tech in Week 1. Conference play included victories over Squirrel's Flying Michigan State Spartans and the ever rising Penn State Nittany Lions led by Curt Eversole at the helm. Apparently he's a better coach than Bill O' Brien (who fled back to New England). Some bitter losses include to the eventual National Champion Nebraska Cornhuskers led by Coach Eric Jeanneret (and his creepy ass Bo "Kitty" Pellini pictures), Coach OV's eventual runner-up Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the rival Ohio State Buckeyes in a heartbreaker.

God Coach Jeanneret, are you trying to scare children? That can't be unseen.

A team more or less a push away, ended up being way better than the game's overall was permitting. Many of the teams ratings were in the low 80s; thinking that maybe this team might go maybe 5-7, but ended up surpassing expectations. This year somewhat pays the price as there are many graduating seniors that played a key role in this season. They are listed below and will all be missed.

Graduating Seniors:
Jonathan Brown, ROLB
Nathan Scheelhaase, QB
Spencer Harris, WR
Ryan Lankford, WR
Tim Kynard, DE
Evan Wilson, TE
Miles Osei, WR
Stevie Hull, WR
Jake Feldmeyer, C
Cory Lewis, RT

"QB Nathan Scheelhaase will be missed as a key role in this offense, we wish him all the best". - Coach Brown

After a tumultuous year, expectations grow even bigger in Coach Brown's second season at the helm of the Fighting Illini. Led by the transfer from Oklahoma State Wes Lunt, the Sophomore QB will look to take the B1G by storm. Mason Monheim will once again lead the defense, due to the departure of his mentor Johnathan Brown.  Only time will tell whether this team is going to be a fluke, but for once we can all agree that Illinois can have nice things.
