Why you want it. Plays most PSOne and PSP games if you ever purchased those on the Playstation Store. The unit will be heavily integrated into the Playstation 4 via Remote Play so that you can scout in Madden while watching live football on TV, or ignoring your significant other's request to watch some Rom Com bullshit. All PS4 (non-camera based) games should be Remote Playable via Vita. Plus the actual Vita games/remakes are pretty slick. The screen is gorgeous on the original model.  Price is steep though.[/left]
[left]The handheld only has one set of triggers. But you can customize the touchscreen or the rear touchpad (kinky) to act as the other set of triggers for PSOne games. Cross Controller functionality for a few games lets you replace the Dualshock controller, but not widely supported by developers.

09/09/13: Sony announced a hardware refresh smaller/lighter in size/weight and in different colors. The unit includes 1 GB of storage (not much). The screen was also "downgraded" from OLED to LCD. There's now a USB plug, probably separate from Sony's proprietary charge port. And the battery lasts longer.

09/09/13: A new product announced today was the Vita TV. It plays Vita (Non-touchscreen games), PSP, and PSOne games on your TV via a Dualshock 3 controller. It will be a media streamer (hulu, netflix, etc), and act as a PS4 Remote Play Hub. In this way, you can stream one PS4 console on multiple tv's across the house hooked up to the Vita TV. Still, for those not going after the Vita because it's a handheld, which let's be honest, are viewed as only for people who buy Nintendont's and play Pokemon, it should be a great gateway drug to Vita titles. Or a simple way to distract the wife and kids on a different TV while you play your PS4. There's some quality Vita games people are missing out on. The unit even has a card slot if you stumble across a cheap physical copy of a game.

Polygon | Playstation TV Release Date

The Playstation TV is coming to the US on October 14th, 2014. In Japan it was meant as a Vita device that could also Remote Play stream games from the PS4. Sony's new marketing message is to push it's capabilities to stream your PS4 console to another TV in your house.

The device carries a Vita slot for Vita cartridges, a Vita memory card slot for storage of digital games and apps, an ethernet port, and wi-fi card.

$100 will get you the base unit.
$140 will get you a bundle with a Vita game, memory card, and HDMI cord.

Overall a really cool device. Hopefully Sony worked out the sometimes sluggish performance.
