2018 Season Preview: Chicago Bears Empty 2018 Season Preview: Chicago Bears

Eight months ago, Chicago had the Super Bowl within its grasp. Then the Seattle Seahawks went on a torrid comeback, and Chicago was unable to stop the Four Verts. Chicago entered the offseason returning 22 of 24 starters on offense, defense, and special teams. During the course of free agency and the draft, Chicago found three new starters.

New (and returning) Faces:

WR Alshon Jeffery
Jeffery is a #1 WR joining a team that already had a #1 receiver in Cam Meredith. He even took a lesser deal to return. QB Trubisky now has two monsters on the outside to keep the defense on its heels. Better in traffic, Jeffery replaces Kevin White, with White moving to the slot.

K Chandler Catanzaro
The Bears new Kicker boasts just as much leg strength as the exiting Dan Carpenter, but impressed coaches with his more consistent accuracy.

Depth players signed: QB Colin Kaepernick, RB Denard Robinson, KR/WR De'Anthony Thomas, OLB Connor Barwin

Players lost:

RB Ka'Deem Carey, WR Kendall Wright, TE Zach Miller, RG Josh Sitton, C Hroniss Grasu, C Eric Kush, RT Bobby Massie, RT Tom Compton, DE Mitch Unrein, MLB Christian Jones, OLB Sam Acho

Draft Recap:

Things kicked off with a boom. In the first round Chicago found an absolute stud at Offensive Tackle. From there they found another great Offensive Guard. In the middle of the draft, the Bears were so happy with their two new offensive linemen, that they traded Josh Sitton away for two third round picks.

Round 1: RT Martinas Rankin (Mississippi St) Superstar Dev
Round 2: RG Quenton Nelson (Notre Dame)
Round 3: CB Quenton Meeks (Stanford)
Round 4: RT Brock Ruble (Florida State)
Round 4: OLB Clelin Ferrel (Clemson) Quick Dev
Round 5: TE Marvin Sanders (Florida State)
Round 6: C Coleman Shelton (Washington)
Round 7: TE Ryan Yurachek (Marshall)
Undrafted FA: WR Richie James (Middle Tennessee State)

Offense:

Expect more balance. The Bears were very pass heavy a year ago as they saw the immense talent that Trubisky had. With a year under his belt, expect Trubisky to balance his weapons and targets. TE Zach Miller was a crutch for the QB and left in Free Agency to receive more money from the Ravens. Instead, Trubisky will on his duo of Jeffery and Meredith. Five different TE's have packages for the Bears to try and replace what Miller provided. Yes, five TEs to replace one guy.

Expect Jordan Howard to regain his rookie form, and for Tarik Cohen to continue to develop as a nice curveball type player. WR De'Anthony Thomas was signed as a Kick Returner, but worked his way in to a couple of packages for the Bears.

Defense:

Every defensive starter for the Bears return, including their key reserves. OLB Leonard Floyd continues to develop quickly, and is banging on the door of elite status. Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman, Jerrell Freeman, and Danny Trevathan will continue to help snuff out the run. The secondary is intact as well, able to jump routes with the pressure Floyd produces.

Special Teams:

The Bears let the erratic Dan Carpenter walk, and upgraded with Catanzaro. Pat O'Donnell is one of the better Punters in the league, and is one of the fastest, allowing him to kickoff despite having the weaker leg than Catanzaro. #PuntersArePeopleToo and O'Donnell is not afraid to lay the wood on kickoff coverage. De'Anthony Thomas, Tarik Cohen, Denard Robinson, Eddie Jackson, and rookie Richie James are all very dangerous returners.
