The Bears and Steelers faced off on Heinz Field this week. Chicago raced out to an early lead with a finish that may have been an instant classic depending on which sideline you were standing on.
Chicago raced out to an early lead thanks to the hands of Alshon Jeffery extending the drive, and the legs of rookie Keenan Prude punching it in. The Bears defense followed the offense's lead and shut down the early Steelers drives. But the Steelers showed heart and kept things close. At halftime Chicago had a 20-7 lead and control of everything.
In the second half, the Bears was a bit too confident in their grasp on the game and went ultra conservative. Here's where things got interesting as Ryan Shazier went into overdrive mode and single handedly turned the momentum of the game around for Pittsburgh.
Early in the 3rd quarter, Shazier would slide out to the flat unblocked on a screen pass to absolutely destroy Keenan Prude. Shazier would also scoop up the ball giving Pittsburgh their first big spark. The turnover led to a FG, putting the game back into a 2 possession battle. The rest of the 3rd and 4th quarter for Chicago were stifled outside of a 70 yard TD run by Prude.
Late in the fourth quarter, Chicago was in field goal range. Playing it safe, Chicago QB Jaquante Baugher saw no easy throw and rolled out to avoid the pressure and throw the ball away. Shazier had other plans and bolted to the flat wrapping up the QB from behind and dropping Chicago well out of FG range. Chicago punts and backs up the Steelers inside their own 3 yard line and held just a 6 point lead instead of the 9 they played for.
Big Ben immediately moves the ball down the field with ease. Both teams had 3 time outs. Chicago had to decide whether to use the TOs to save time, or gamble and use the clock against the Steelers. Pittsburgh had to decide whether to play it quick, or leave no time left.
Both teams played this as the final possession. Pittsburgh gets to the 6 yard line with 30 seconds left. Big Ben throws out of a sack. Then advances the ball to the 1 yard line on 2nd and goal. No review to see whether the receiver made it in. It looked clooooose. On 3rd and inches, they go for the relatively safe toss play. Le'Veon Bell gets caught up on his blocker playing patty cake with the edge defender and is bottled up to force 4th and Goal from the 7. With 4 seconds left, Big Ben darts the ball over the top of the defense to Antonio Brown, who comes down with the ball near the back of the end zone. But out of Bounds. Exhale.
