Offseason Actions, Transactions and Reactions

We have opened the Conference Championship Games and as 4 teams prepare to battle to see who will represent their Conference in Super Bowl XLI there are 28 other teams that have already entered the off-season.  For those 28 other teams its time to start thinking about the 2017 season.  Do we re-sign our current coaching staff?  How much money is available for Free Agency?  What positions do we need to target the most for improvement?

While we wait for the 2016 to be completed, feel free to share how your off-season is going.

Pittsburgh Steelers Off-Season

Mike Tomlin Re-Signs

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

The Mike Tomlin era will continue in Pittsburgh for at least another three years as Tomlin signed a 3 year deal worth $6.5M per year to remain the Steelers head coach.  Despite not winning it all this season, Mike Tomlin did one of his best coaching jobs as he was able to earn a playoff berth in teh tough AFC despite starting the year 2-4 after an early season 4 game losing streak.  Coach Tomlin, being the leader he is, was able to rally the troops as they closed the season winning 9 of their last 10 (including their last 6 in a row).  With some improvements on the defensive side this team could be poised for a Super Bowl run in 2017.

End of the 3-4?

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

With Coach Tomlin returning, he also announced that there would be no changes to the staff meaning OC Todd Haley and DB Keith Butler would both be retained.  That isn't to say there wasn't big news being shared.  Tomlin hinted that he and Coach Butler had decided to shift the defensive focus to a base 4-3 for the first time since the Chuck Knoll era.  This will obviously effect how the team attacks free agency and the draft but Coach Tomlin was confident that the team already has the personnel to make a successful transition.  The initial plan is for Stephon Tuit to slide inside on the DL and join Steve McClendon as 4-3 DT, Ryan Shazier will move to OLB (where he played in college) and the results of free agency and the draft will ultimately determine where Lawrence Timmons and Bud Dupree get slotted.  The fruits of those portions of the off-season will determine whether Timmons stays inside or moves to OLB and whether Bud Dupree remains at OLB or slides down to DE.

What else is in store for the Steelers?  Wait and see ...

Re: Offseason Actions, Transactions and Reactions

To end 2016, the Chicago Bears made the playoffs, and looked primed to make an appearance in the NFC Championship game after rushing out to a 14-0 lead on Washington, only to go scoreless the rest of the game. Two months ago, they were headed for a top 10 draft pick after losing 3 of their opening 4, with the only win coming from a sim. With an offense that returned all 11 starters, the team was poised to explode out the gates, not implode from their sidelines.

Despite the rugged start, the Chicago offense found a rhythm, posting some of the best numbers in the league, ranking 4th in points scored, despite losing both Matt Forte and Alshon Jeffery for 6 weeks at a time. Kevin White was a monster on his own, and Jeremy Langford proved to be a feature back in the pass happy offense.

The defense for Chicago featured a miscast front 7 anchored by two All-Pro corners in the secondary, and allowed the 4th least amount of points in the league. All of this while putting an aging Jared Allen on the outside, and a tweener Lamarr Houston at DE, despite his 300 lbs frame.

Entering 2017, Chicago will have a ton of major pieces returning to build upon, but there will some major changes the team will have to make, should they wish to take the next step towards a Super Bowl run.

Coaching Staff
After a failed hire in Marc Trestman, John Fox can only be viewed as a bit of a messiah to the Chicago faithful with his quick turnaround in the past two years. His entire staff returns again, and coaching with him he has the esteemed assistant coaches Adam Gase and Vic Fangio, two major head coaching candidates through the years. Gase, a lifelong Bears fan has grown by leaps and bounds at offensive coordinator, spreading from the West Coast offense he ran with Peyton Manning, to a vertical attack brought on by Zach Mettenberger's cannon of an arm.  Fangio, has to receive credit for getting Jared Allen to play linebacker, and moving former DE Shea McLellin to MLB where his career was saved, for now.

On their Way Out
The Bears offense was built around the multi-faceted abilities of Matt Forte. After a great 2015 season, the last of the tread on Forte's wheels fell off, and after a broken collarbone, he finds his contract demands too high to pay. Forte must contemplate retirement, or special teams, as very few teams will have a role for him without his legs.

At TE, Martellus Bennett is the most elusive TE in the game, and exposed several holes in defenses for Chicago. But he finds himself getting pushed out by a 2nd year TE who showed as much athleticism, but more willingness to block, and no demands for a ridiculous 6 year deal.  At least two starting jobs are up for grabs on offense, and the Bears can address both with the draft prospects, and free agent market looming, as well as going in-house with the likes of Jeremy Langford.

On defense, that crazy mullet of a man, Jared Allen, will be sent packing. He showed flashes at OLB, but never sustained a presence to threaten an offense. Six of the front 7 positions will be on the chopping block.

Sticking Around?
Three-fifths of the Bears offensive line made the Pro Bowl. Kyle Long, who immediately gelled at RT, after playing RG, is likely sliding over to LT to handle the athletic pass rushers, opening up 2nd year RT Nick Huval to take over as Jermon Bushrod either gets benched, gets cut, or slides over to RT as his pass protection has slipped. Then again, strong Linemen are hard to find, maybe there will be suitors for Huval and his 91 Strength to save Bushrod from the bench?

SS Antrel Rolle enters the final season of his 3 year deal, but has become a major liability at 35 years old after a banner year 1 in Chicago.  Third year pro Adrian Amos is primed to take over for him, but can Rolle's contract justify Special Teams play?

While Shea McClellin has bounced around, Vic Fangio sees something in him. Will the pass rushing LB find a home on the outside again in replacing Jared Allen? Or will he forever be a situational LB in the middle, and a special teams ace?

The Bears will have a litany of questions entering 2017. On top of the roster, there may be a new stadium breaking ground.

Same staff coming back with a new trainer. Jack Del Rio was coaching for his job this past year and earned his place with a coach of the year caliber season, he was able to infuse a handful of rookies which led to the raiders explosive offence.

GM/Owner is looking to add to his defence this year as not being able to stop anyone came back to bite them in the playoffs when the steelers scored on every possession, he is also looking to move on from Cooper who preformed horribly after the addition of Blake and Montgomery. With money to spend watch the raiders as they try to take that final step to become legitimate super bowl contenders.

Super Bowl Champion Redskins go big on defense in FA snagging the top 2 safeties in the class. Both with 90+ hit power to make teams second guess aggressive catching.
Skins also  signed a 3rd down pass rush specialist in M.Jackson to provide pressure from the inside.

On offense the Skins added 2 small additions in HB C.Michael for short yardage and goaline situations and 6'4" WR J.Hunter to be used in jump ball situations and the possible replacement of Djax.

The Bears are set heading into the draft. Every starting position is accounted for, and they enter the draft with no immediate needs to fill. They can draft BPA all the way through, or reach for a developmental player.

Big signings:
TE Vance McDonald brings a fierce blocking mentality to Chicago. He won't see many passes, but can also flex to TE in Goalline sets.

RT Rick Wagner gives the Bears enough flexibility on the OLine, that Kyle Long will flex to LT to protect Mettenberger's backside.

DT/DE Star Lotulelei is the star of this free agent class. Chicago gets a disruptive linemen to anchor the 3-4 set, as well as hold down the interior on Nickel/Dime sets.

WR Kenny Bell was not a signing, but a trade acquisition. He will play the Kick Returner role that was promised to Tavon Austin who decided not to accept Chicago's generous contract offer.

ROLB Corey Lemonier will fill in for the departed Jared Allen, Willie Young, and Lamarr Houston. Paired with Lotulelei and McPhee, the Bears don't need him to destroy, just hold his own.

Other moves added special teams depth.

After opening up the check book last offseason to splurge on TE Coby Fleener in free agency, the Steelers had a much more "Steeler-like" free agency period this time around as they elected to only pursue to potential backups.

QB David Fales
OT Charles Brown

Fales gives the Steelers a capable backup following the retirement of Matt Cassell and Charles Brown will be the first Tackle off the bench in the event of an injury to either Kelvin Beachum or Marcus Gilbert.

The Steelers will be moving to a 4-3 defense this season and would like to fill some of those pieces but management is confident that they can do so with the talent currently on the roster as well as through the draft.

The following players announced that they would sign with the Browns following final round of Free Agency:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Coach Pettine on the rest of the offseason signings:

QB Robert Griffin III
"Robert is the type of QB you want to have to compete for a starter and we have him as a backup... dream scenario, considering Johnny's injury history"

LE Larry Webster III
"Larry was a key pass rusher late in the season last year and decided to test free agency and ultimately came back to cleveland, looking forward to him grooming into that 6'7 frame"

SS Kenny Vaccaro
"Kenny will have to grow this upcoming season as a backup/special teamer as Tyvon(Branch) and Tyrone(Franks) have had a year in our sytem and have done well, he is a great talent though."
