League Discussion: Trades
Fri Jul 25, 2014 6:14 pm
It's that time of year again. It's time to offer input on your wishes or opinions on certain franchise topics. Madden is about a month away, so we have plenty of time to pass until we get our hands on the game, but we might as well get the boring stuff out of the way during this time.
In the past, I've set a strict trade rules. I did this to limit any newbies from defacing a roster and bolting or getting themselves booted, and also to emulate the real NFL trade market. This year, things are a bit different and I've compiled a year and a half of trades to back things up. Any arguments that have the chance to persuade me to adjust rules will need precedents to back it up.
This year I plan to run a bit more of a "stricter" league in the sense of limited user team membership to only those that match with the rest of the usual members instead of allowing mass amounts of players to sign up and see who sticks. But that's a different discussion.
Proposed rules for Madden 15:
-- Probation Period: An owner must complete 1 user game in the regular season before they can post a trade block and/or trade players. Every owner must have at least 1 Scouting Report written by a user they faced. They must also write at least one scouting report on a fellow user.
I cannot find word if the XBox's "CoachGlass" type of feature will be made available for PS4 users or not. Microsoft's SmartGlass is XBox exclusive, but you never know if a multi-platform solution is in the works. If so, we may be able to explore posting screen captures of user stats for self scouting reports.
-- Base Trade Restrictions: Players rated 88 Overall and higher cannot be traded. Players given the Franchise Tag in the offseason can be traded. All trade offers must be posted and approved by both teams in a trade thread, and finalized by the _______.
Deciding between trade rulings via Commissioner, and/or Co-commissioner, or Trade Committee (2/3 vote).
CPU trades I'm undecided on.
-- Exceptions: Players can win exceptions to allow the trade of an 88-93 overall rated player.
I'm playing with the idea of creating awards or boosts for players granting possible exceptions in trades for different league accomplishments and scenarios. The idea is to add competitive balance if a team is struggling. The second aspect is to add another game element to try and keep everyone involved season-long regardless of their record. What those boosts are, I'm not sure yet, ideas are welcome. It's tough to balance the trade rule for NFL authenticity, and how to get the most gameplay experience out of Madden. But give me credit, I'm trying right?
Let us hear your thoughts. Below I've posted a trade history and different numbers for reference.

Trade Exception/Boost ideas:
Jumpstart Boost: A player with a true Top 10 draft pick (not obtained via trade) can trade an 88+ rated player to fill another hole on their team with the requirement that they replace the traded player by using their Top 10 pick on a player with the same position.
Example: 4/5 of the red trades above included the team drafting a player to replace the one traded.
IR Boost: Awarded if a player that ranks in the Top 10 league-wide in that team's proficiency is placed on the IR for 8 or more games. e.g. Passing team loses Pocket QB or WR, or rushing team loses RB, or rush defense loses key tackler or pass defense loses sack artist.
Proficiency: At start of season, choose whether your team will be focused on one aspect of the game, or just base off which category the team ranks higher in league-wide.
Up and Coming Boost: A team with a true Top 15 pick (not obtained via trade) can swap their Top 15 3rd Rd pick with any other user's 2nd or 3rd round pick as long as it is within 15 picks.
I'd figure this idea would be contested, but just a thought.
Critical Acclaim Boost: A user player that wins both an AI-based and User-selected award with the same player gets a trade exception. e.g. MVP or Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Swami Saw It Coming Boost: A designated pre-season "player to watch" becomes a user-selected award winner at season's end.
Math is Hard Boost: Awarded to a team that's over the cap in the off-season, or if a player is holding out and cannot be signed under the cap.
Obviously assuming players can hold out in Madden 15.
"Dibs" Boost: A bottom 10 team can opt to forfeit two earned trade exception boosts to prevent all other user teams from bidding on a free agent of their choice. Does not guarantee them the signing of the player as CPU teams can still bid. If, after two of the three bidding stages nobody has bid on the player, they're fair game for everyone.
Media Mogul: The user with the best shared content (weekly recap posts, Sportscenter posts, league stories, highlight videos, etc.) can be voted to receive a boost.
Playoff teams would not be eligible.
Rule-breakers would not be eligible.
Previously earned boosts would expire if the team makes the playoffs.
Two boosts can be combined to exceed the 93 overall rating limit.
Boosts would not be able to be transferred.
Only 1 trade exception can be made within a 2 year period.
Face of Franchise players like Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Adrian Peterson, Tom Brady, etc would still be untradeable.
This idea is incredibly complex, but could also be rewarding. The idea is to help keep league parity, and give anyone struggling a chance to make a run a bit quicker. I'm curious how everyone would feel about it.

This idea is incredibly complex, but could also be rewarding. The idea is to help keep league parity, and give anyone struggling a chance to make a run a bit quicker. I'm curious how everyone would feel about it.

Wow, thats alot of info.
With new owners- with the ps4, we can record and stream games. So cheesers can be caught pretty quickly. We can set up a facebook page that everyone can upload their games or clips of games.
On trades- Its hard to find a players value from madden to the real NFL. Mid 70s Madden players can be studs depending on ratings that matter.
I know if I am building a team and have some older 90 overall players that wont resign or want big money, I should be able to trade them for whatever I can get. Or maybe I have a 95 spd rb 70 ovr that I like better than my 90 ovr rb. Shouldnt I be allowed to trade him for players at different positions to help the team?
Just my thoughts

I feel that forcing people to write up a scouting report should be optional. No one has got time for that! Granted yes some people do but from what I saw last year.... A LOT of people don't(including myself) So I for one feel that t should be optional or at least changed

I think the OVR rating should be fluid as they vary depending on schemes too. My 88 ovr may be a 91 ovr on a different team, just something to consider.
I agree with Mission, older players should be part of the exception as well as players that won't resign too. Trading away a 33 y.o. 91 rated Greenway isn't terrible and if a team has space to absorb his salary and I don't want to pay him that much (see Anquan Boldin). If I'm trying to resign a guy and he turns down my offer and is going to be a FA, trying to get something of value for him would be a good option to have.
I actually like the scouting reports Havoc. It's nice to read through them before playing a game and can be pretty helpful. Since you record your games, you could just post a link to the game and let that be your review right?
Boosts are a good idea too. It could work out, especially if it's a group of vets and won't be stupid about trades in general.

Adding some further thoughts. I'm sorry about the messy tables, they look awful when the forum formats them. It's really just a regurgitation of the first table in different forms. Stripping names and looking at ratings involved with each trade and breaking down the different elements of each trade to use as as a way to set precedent for realistic trades.
@mission
Madden ratings are not a breakdown of how much a player can produce. But it is a great indicator of a player's caliber. Elite caliber players just don't get traded in a normal situation in the NFL. It's often due to off-the-field issues. Almost everything in the NFL revolves around the draft and free agency. Limiting trades fuels the free agent pool. Of those 5 trades, maybe 2 of them can be emulated, and they all involved draft picks. Four of the five picks involved drafting that players replacement with a first round pick.
Five 90+ rated players (Madden 25 scale) have been traded since the beginning of 2013.
Anquan Boldin: Severe cap issues. Couldn't resign him and he threatened retirement if I recall.
Percy Harvin: Drafted First Round replacement. Personality clashes between him and team, and the whole migraine saga.
Darrelle Revis: Drafted Top 10 replacement. Coming off a knee injury, wasn't sure if he'd be able to play. Outlier trade.
Eugene Monroe: Drafted Top 10 replacement. Really no issues, Jags just didn't want to pay him.
Stevie Johnson: Drafted Top 10 replacement. Personality issues with staff.
@Havoc
I've never mandated weekly scouting reports. But requiring a minimum of one being written was always used as a way to ensure that the user understands what we mean sim to be, and that others viewed their matchup as sim, and hopefully show that they're committed to being active in the league. And as Commando said, with your video prowess, you can always embed matchups. In general, it only takes a few minutes to post a report. I never expect an essay. A game lasts an hour, what's another 5 minutes to recap the game?
@Commando
Scheme fit does affect a player's overall rating as it should. A 4-3 DE will rate less as a 3-4 DE, and would allow more flexibility in allowing a player to be traded if a team was looking to switch defenses. Of course it will be expected that a user does not take advantage of the AI ratings to lower a player's ratings they want to change.
Overall, where's the precedent that older players get traded just because they're older? Trying to emulate a sim league, the players just don't get swapped around that easily. Watching leagues other members are in, it's absurd to see players like Adrian Peterson get traded for Jordy Nelson and Eddie Lacy whether the owners were active/good guys or not. There's so much wrong with that scenario.

I won't get too long-winded because I think at the core we just differ on how sim a sim league should run, but I agree more with what Mission and Commando have said just because I hate playing with players whose real life teams were dumb enough to lock them up long term with a dumb contract, whether it's too much money or too many years. I guess releasing a player is always possible in that scenario, but I don't view a Greenway (for example) trade to seem preposterous.
I guess on one hand I think that this league is largely composed of vets who understand what we are doing here, so I don't think there need to be that many trade rules aside from both teams having a logical reasoning for the deal. But on the other hand I know that leaves "reasonable" as pretty subjective and would probably lead to dispute at some point, so some type of cemented regulations are probably necessary.
Just do whatever and the dudes will abide.

I just wanna add this perspective on trades, in support of keeping trading flexible. To go back to what Commando said, using an example of trading a guy like Greenway: The NFL is indeed fueled by draft and somewhat Free Agency, but the difference is that we know here in the AALOA that we are only getting through a few seasons. Our ideas of building for the future aren't like a real GM in that after a few seasons we essentially start over with a new Madden. So the timetable for turnaround is considerably smaller. We can't look 5-6 years down the road because it's just not there.
So that would probably be my strongest argument for keeping trading more flexible. The fact that there really isn't the longevity needed to make a "sim style" building process. There are some powerhouse rosters out there and I think the weak teams especially should be able to make a few moves to better themselves to be more competitive.
