The Spring practices are over. The Summer training camp is over. All the hype and chatter about who will win their Conference Title and who may win the National Championship is useless now. The time for talk is over as the kickoff to the NCAA14 2013 Season is upon us. Eleven Coaches accepted the challenge of bringing glory to their school and all of their coaching and preparation comes to fruition now. All that time creating, editing and practicing with your playbook comes to light now. All that time getting the right mix of personnel on offense and defense come to light now. The holes in your gameplan will also come to light now.
Its FOOTBALL BABY !!! Lets get it Started.
AALoA Game Of The Week
Penn State vs #20 UCLA
Two storied programs fighting to get back to their place amongst college football's best square off against each other on a neutral field. Met Life Stadium will be the place where the Nittany Lions and Bruins get set to open the season. Jim Mora Jr. did a fine job leading the Bruins to a 9-5 record in 2012 and a bowl appearance but apparently it was good enough as he was replaced by another former NFL HC in Jon Gruden. Gruden brings his sour puss face as well as a gritty hard nosed style to La La Land as the Bruins look to reclaim southern California as theirs.
They are led by Sr LB Anthony Barr who might be the best in the nation. However, as good as Barr is the fate of the Bruins may hinge on the success and growth of sophomore QB Brett Hundley. Can Coach Gruden bring the best out in Hundley? Time will tell.
On the other sideline will also be a fresh face. The Penn State program experience a horrific season off the field last year but HC Bill O'Brien did an outstanding job of rallying the troops and getting an 8-4 record. It was so good that he couldn't refuse offers to go back to the pros. Out goes O'Brien and in comes Curt Eversole. Coach Eversole will have to navigate his way through a tough B1G schedule and do so with a true freshmen QB.
Christian Hackenberg had a chance to decommit from Penn State after the Sandusky fiasco but chose to keep his word and that has proved to wise so far as Penn State post season ban was lifted by the NCAA. After enrolling in school early Hasckenberg beat out the competition to earn the starting QB job. How will Coach Eversole bring along his young QB? Will he lean on RB's Zach Zwinak and Bill Belton to shoulder the load or will he give the frosh the green light from jump?
Week 1 in Met Life Stadium is where we'll find out the answers to all of these questions.

Sparty on! The MSU defense struggles early and then completely dominates the 2nd half to lead Michigan State to an 18-14 upset win over #11 Louisville.

PSU @ UCLA set to kick off in about 30 minutes. One of the more even matchups PSU will have this season. True freshman QB Christian Hackenberg gets thrown into the fire right off the bat, starting his college career on the west coast VS a ranked opponent.
The Penn State offense has shown steady improvement in spring scrimmage games, but the defense has shown no signs of positive life. It could be a long season for the Nittany Lions. ETA until opening kickoff: 25 minutes

PSU Defeats UCLA in Sloppy Game
34-24
The first half was an eyesore. Christian Hackenberg's first collegiate pass was intercepted and UCLA and Penn State traded interceptions right before half time. Hackenberg threw 3 interceptions in total but remedied them with 4TD passes, all to different receivers. Freshman RB Akeel Lynch led Penn State with 3 receptions for 65 yards and a TD. WRs Robinson, Kenney, and Lewis all scored as well.
Penn State finished with 140 yards on the ground with Junior powerback Zach Zwinak leading the way with 70 yards on 11 carries. Lynch added 27 and Hackenberg added 43 yards on the ground.
UCLA RB Jordon James led the Bruins with 37 yards on the ground, while sophomore QB Brett Hundley threw for 309 yards, 3TD and 2 INT. TE Darius Bell led the Bruins with 6 catches for 132 yards and a TD. WR Shaquelle Evans also broke the hundred yards mark with 116 yards and a TD of his own.
Penn State went into the half with a 17-10 lead after Hackenberg threw a redzone interception with under a minute left in the half. Hundley returned the favor moments later, setting up a last second PSU field goal. In the 3rd quarter, PSU broke the game open by adding 14 more to make it 31-10. UCLA rallied with some big plays, adding 14 in the 4th, but it wasn't enough. The final was 34-24.
True Freshman CB Anthony Smith was the standout defensive player, notching 2 interceptions. He was active defensively and did not seem intimidated by the bright lights of collegiate athletics. Coach Eversole has not stated whether All-American hopeful Adrian Amos will remain at CB or switch back to safety.

Nebraska sprints out ahead early on Texas only to collapse late. With 41 seconds left on the clock, Taylor Martinez shakes the rust and drives Nebraska down the field for a game winning field goal as time expires. More to come on Sportscenter later tonight.

Defense Shines In Opening Day Upset
The crowd at Kinnick Stadium were in a frenzy as the 2013 season was set to begin and the mighty Oregon Ducks slated to be the Hawkeyes' first opponent. Coming into the season the thought was that the defense had a chance to be stout but the question marks were a plenty on offense and that held true for the opening game. QB Jake Rudock handled himself well going 18/24 for 216 yards with 1TD and 1INT but the Hawkeyes had plenty of trouble running the ball against that Ducks front (25 carries for 45 yards as a team).
Jake Rudock threw for 216 Yards and 1TD in his debut
However it was a smothering defense that was the story as they were able to hold the high powered Oregon offense in check. DeAnthony Thomas had his moments but the Ducks, one of the best rushing teams in the country a year ago, finished the game with just 77 yards on 20 carries. It was even tougher going for QB Marcus Mariotta and the Ducks passing game as they were held to just 77 yards through the air and 5 interceptions. Thanks to two early interceptions the Hawkeyes jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead and eventually stretched that lead to 20-0 in the third quarter before the Ducks got on the board. Oregon cut the lead to 20-10 and had the ball but FS Tanner Miller's second pick of the game ultimately sealed the Ducks' fate.
FS Tanner Miller accounted for 2 of the Hawkeyes' 5 picks
The Hawkeyes will hit the road next week to face the Tennessee Volunteers as they try to go to 2-0 on the young season.
FINAL SCORE
Oregon Ducks 10
Iowa Hawkeyes 20
