THE HAWKEYE REPORT
2013 Iowa Hawkeyes Football
There's a buzz in the cornfields in Iowa City and it has nothing to do with the new tractor that the Johnson Family recently bought.  The excitement is due to football season being here again.  The good folks of Iowa City and supporters of the Iowa Hawkeyes football program watched as the Gold and Yellow suffered through a disappointing 4-8 season (2-6 in the B1G).  It was an effort that found them tied for last in the Legends Division.  However, with a new season comes a new sense of optimism.  Another thing new in Iowa City and new to the Iowa football program is new Head Coach Steel Pitt.  HC Steel Pitt comes to Iowa City after successful stints as the HC of Syracuse University and University of Virginia (winning National Championships at each stop).  Look for HC Steel Pitt to bring back a hard hitting no non-sense defense to go along with a varied yet balanced attack on offense.  The Iowa faithful also hope that HC Steel Pitt also brings with him his knack for recruiting big time talent in order to ensure that the Hawkeyes flourish for years to come.  But first things first ... the 2013 season!

2013 Iowa Hawkeye Football Outlook

OFFENSE

The Hawkeyes lacked explosiveness in 2012 and enter the 2013 season with open questions as to how they will put points on the board.  The Hawkeyes will have to replace their starting QB and a heated QB battle has raged on in Summer camp between JR Cody Sokol and SO Jake Rudock.  Both guys offer the same in terms of athletic ability, arm strength and accuracy so the winner of the competition will come down to who grasps the offense quicker and who performs better in live action.  WR Kevonte Martin Manley leads a solid, but not spectacular group of wideouts on offense.  Their biggest threat in the passing game may come in the form of SR TE CJ Fiedorowicz.  While the passing game is an open question there's not denying that the strength of this offense is the OL which returns an experienced big bunch of road graders.  Whoever wins the RB battle between JR Damon Bullock and JR Mark Weisman will have some holes to run through.

DEFENSE

While there are many questions on offense, the Iowa faithful are hoping that the defense will be the calling card while the offense figures things out.  This is an experienced bunch that will be lead by their front 7, in particular their LB Corp.  The Hawkeyes will sport three Senior LB's in OLB Christian Kirksey, OLB Anthony Hitchens and MLB James Morris.  Coach Steel Pitt lean on his front 7 to shut down opposing running games while creating pressure in the passing game to help an inexperienced secondary.

OVERALL

Coach Steel Pitt will have his work cut out for him in Year 1.  There questions at QB, no sign of a true game breaker and inexperience on the back end of the defense.  In a stacked B1G this could spell another season of fiddling around the B1G basement.  If there is a piece of optimism its in the fact that the Hawkeyes' strengths are in the trenches on both sides of the ball.  Coach Steel Pitt will have hope that the OL can help generate yards and points on the ground while the QB situation gets settled.  On Defense, he'll have to hope that the front 7 can stop the run and generate enough pressure to make up for the short comings on the back end.

Wade is a two way player that excelled as a dual threat QB on offense and a shutdown CB on defense.  The Hawkeyes will have a difficult decision to make as they could use help in the secondary, but Wade's talents a dual threat QB could be too tempting.

B1G Conference Media Day Coverage

The B1G Conference held their annual Media Day event in which all the Head Coaches had their turn at the podium to talk about their teams outlook for 2013.  Here's a bit of the transcript from new Iowa Hawkeyes Head Coach Steel Pitt's time in front of the press.

Media:  Coach Pitt, congrats on the new job at Iowa, but what made you decide to leave the University of Virginia?

Coach Steel Pitt (SP):  The University of Virginia was very good to me but I felt like my job there was done and was ready to move on to new challenges so I jumped at the chance to compete in the B1G Conference and bring the Hawkeyes back to national prominence.

Media:  During your time at Virginia, you focused on the passing game and threw the ball around quite a bit.  Given that fact and the emergence of the spread option will you be transitioning the Hawkeyes offense to a more modern style of offense?

SP:  It is true that we featured the QB at Virginia and I will try to incorporate aspects of the Spread and Read Options into our gameplan but I've always believed that you need to be able to run the ball in football.  That doesn't have to be 3 yards and a cloud of dust, but you have to have that mentality that when you want to run the ball you can.  Honestly, my style is whatever gets us the W.  When I was at Syracuse we featured the running game and even had a Heisman winning RB in AALoA HOFer Prince Tyson Gulley.  When I was at Virginia it was obvious that our biggest weapon was at the QB spot in AALoA HOFer Phillip Sims so we put the ball in his hands more often.

Media:  What was the first thing you put in your "To-Do Book" when you arrived in Iowa City?

SP:  "BEAT NEBRASKA!!!!"

Media:  Really?  Is that one game that important, especially coming off such a disappointing season?

SP:  Excuse my language, but you damn right it is.  I understand that its not on the level of Ohio State/Michigan on a National Stage but you don't have to spend too much time speaking to the Iowa faithful to realize that this game matters.  I accepted the job an immediately circled November 29th on my calendar as the day we invade Lincoln.  We want to win a Conference title, we want to win a National title but we believe that to accomplish any of that we'll need to go through our border rivals to do so.  Why not get bragging rights on our way to the B1G Title Game in Indianapolis.

It will be interesting to see the transition from the Horizontal Offense to a Spread/Read system.  And will that tough nosed defense be transitioning from a 4-3 to a 3-4?

Iowa Hawkeyes Football News Update

As the season opener draws near, first year Head Coach Steel Pitt announced earlier today that sophomore Jake Rudock has won the QB battle and will be the starting QB for the Hawkeyes season opener.  Rudock was a very successful QB in High School at St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida before committing to Iowa and has performed well in camp.

The Hawkeye Report 512x
QB Jake Rudock will be the starting QB for the Iowa Hawkeyes

We caught up with Coach Steel Pitt and he had this to say regarding why he went with Rudock:

"First I want to say that Jake and Cody each have worked extremely hard and both performed well trying to pick up the new system.  We, as a coaching staff, feel like both QB's are capable of leading this team to wins and Cody may be called on in the future but Jake has a firmer grasp of the offense right now and has been a little crisper on his throws."

In other position battle news, junior RB Damon Bullock was named the team's starting RB.

Defense Shines In Opening Day Upset

The Hawkeye Report Iowa_defense-thumb-300x366-57642

The crowd at Kinnick Stadium were in a frenzy as the 2013 season was set to begin and the mighty Oregon Ducks slated to be the Hawkeyes' first opponent.  Coming into the season the thought was that the defense had a chance to be stout but the question marks were a plenty on offense and that held true for the opening game.  QB Jake Rudock handled himself well going 18/24 for 216 yards with 1TD and 1INT but the Hawkeyes had plenty of trouble running the ball against that Ducks front (25 carries for 45 yards as a team).

The Hawkeye Report Ncf_a_rudock_ps_400
Jake Rudock threw for 216 Yards and 1TD in his debut

However it was a smothering defense that was the story as they were able to hold the high powered Oregon offense in check. DeAnthony Thomas had his moments but the Ducks, one of the best rushing teams in the country a year ago, finished the game with just 77 yards on 20 carries.  It was even tougher going for QB Marcus Mariotta and the Ducks passing game as they were held to just 77 yards through the air and 5 interceptions.  Thanks to two early interceptions the Hawkeyes jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead and eventually stretched that lead to 20-0 in the third quarter before the Ducks got on the board.  Oregon cut the lead to 20-10 and had the ball but FS Tanner Miller's second pick of the game ultimately sealed the Ducks' fate.

The Hawkeye Report 512x
FS Tanner Miller accounted for 2 of the Hawkeyes' 5 picks

The Hawkeyes will hit the road next week to face the Tennessee Volunteers as they try to go to 2-0 on the young season.

Iowa's Prayers Are Answered on Hail Mary

The Hawkeye Report 10983940_BG1

The Iowa Hawkeyes, fresh off their season opening upset of Oregon, traveled to Knoxville to take on the Tennessee Volunteers in Neyland Stadium.  This game started off going back and forth and would continue that way until the final buzzer.  Both teams came into the game 1-0 looking to stay unbeaten in 2013.  The Iowa Hawkeyes finally got their running game established this week as they combined for 169 yards on the ground and four rushing TD's.  While the passing game accounted for 325 yards, it also saw 4 interceptions thrown, a QB switch and a switch back to the starter.  Tennessee's no huddle attack gave Iowa fits as the two teams traded scores threw 3 quarters.

The Hawkeye Report 6_37984

Fast forwarded to the fourth quarter where the fun continued.  After throwing his second pick in the game midway through the third quarter, Coach Steel Pitt, benched starting QB Jake Rudock and gave the ball to the junior backup, QB Cody Sokol.  After an errant first pass attempt, Sokol calmed down and engineered a scoring drive capped off by RB Mark Weisman's 2 Yard TD plunge.  The Iowa defense came up with one of their few stops in the game forcing the Volunteers to punt with around three minutes remaining.  Iowa had the ball, a 7 point lead and a chance to put the game away with a FG on the ensuing drive.  With 2:30 left on the clock, Coach Steel Pitt and his coaching staff didn't want to get too conservative and decided to throw the ball on second down.  QB Cody Sokol made his first mistake and it was a costly one as his pass on the out route was flat and the CB jumped it hard and returned it for the game tying score.  Coach Steel Pitt quickly put starter Jake Rudock back in the game and he quickly threw his third pick of the game on the next drive.  In a matter of moments the Hawkeyes went from a 7 point lead and the ball to a tied game and trying to at least hold onto overtime.  After 2 plays, the Volunteers found themselves with 3rd and 3 from the Iowa 31 and looking to get into FG range.  Tennessee milked the clock down but on third down, DT Darian Cooper got through the line and recorded a sack.  The loss of yards forced the Volunteers into fourth down and having to punt the ball.  Tennessee punted with 10 seconds on the clock and it rolled into the end zone with 4 ticks remaining.  After a delay of game penalty the Hawkeyes were 85 yards from the endzone and one play remaining.  As Jake Rudock dropped back he could not believe his eyes as a horrific blown coverage allowed the RB Damon Bullock to run untouched down the sidelines.  Rudock threw a perfect strike and Rudock raced the end zone as the Hawkeyes won 35-28.

Battle For The Cy-Hawk Trophy

The Cy-Hawk Trophy is given annually to the winner of the Iowa vs Iowa State football game and week 3 brings us the 61st installment in the series.  The Iowa Hawkeyes hold a 39-21 advantage but the trophy currently resides in Aimes, IA thanks to Iowa State winning the last two meetings.  If you don't think the Cy-Hawk trophy means a lot to these fan bases just ask these Cyclones fans what matters to them.

The Hawkeye Report Iowa-State-Chicks_display_image_display_image

There may not be a lot of "talent" judging by the picture above at Iowa State but they always get up for their meeting with the Hawkeyes.  Both teams come into this year's matchup with unblemished records and both hope to leave with a zero in the loss column and the Cy-Hawk Trophy.

We made our way into the Iowa school store and found a Cyclones fan that apparently lost her way.  we tried to ask her a few questions prior to the matchup but she was less than pleased with our cameras.

The Hawkeye Report DSCF0034

Coach Steel Pitt did not mix words when asked about this week's game.

"We want to beat the sh&t out of the Cyclones.  We circled Week 3 and Week 14 (at Nebraska), as a coaching staff, the second we accepted the job.  We want to own the state of Iowa and its border war with Nebraska"

Hawkeyes Win Cy-Hawk Trophy

The Hawkeye Report 4e688449eb39d.image

Coach Steel Pitt said all games are important, but when he took this job there were two in particular that he circled on the calendar.  One is the season ending Heroes Trophy Game versus Nebraska and the other was the in-state war versus Iowa State better known as the Battle for the Cy-Hawk Trophy.  Well, he's half way to accomplishing that goal.

The Hawkeyes came into the game with a 2-0 record but certainly have not looked impressive as they adjust to a new offensive scheme led by a sophomore QB in Jake Rudock.  As the rains came down in Iowa City it was clear what the gameplan for today's game was going to be ... pound the rock.  Coach Steel Pitt had the following comments with respect to the heavy ground attack this week:

"Offensive Coordinator Greg Davis and I had to look ourselves in the mirror and come to realization that slow start was heavily our fault.  We placed too much upon the shoulders of our young QB and didn't put the team in the best position to win.  We made a vow to get back to smash mouth football, pound the rock, draw up the defense and give our QB more manageable situations and passing opportunities."

The Hawkeye Report 516b513d19b2b.preview-620The Hawkeye Report Ncf_a_weisman_m_400

Using a heavy does of handoffs to Damon Bullock and Mark Weisman the Hawkeyes jumped out to a 14-0 lead and were never really threatened the whole game.  The Cyclones did score in the second quarter to cut the lead to 7 but Iowa scored before the half to take a 21-7 lead into the locker room and the Cyclones never got the lead back down to single digits again.

The Hawkeye Report Ncf_a_rudock_ps_400

The increased focus and success of the ground attack served its intended purpose as the Hawkeyes were routinely set up with second or third and manageable.  As the Cyclones were forced to bring the safeties closer to the line and draw the LB's up, it opened up more 1-on-1 opportunities and clearer passing lanes.  Rudock took full advantage as he completed 15/20 passes for 174 yards and 4TD on the day.  The win puts the Hawkeyes at 3-0 heading into their final no-conference match against highly touted Virginia tech.

Fourth Quarter Collapse Costs Iowa

The Hawkeye Report Virginia-Tech-Football-Action-Hands-on-Helmet-VT-F-OAC-00032lg_display_image

The old mantra is that the game is four quarters and the Iowa Hawkeyes found that out the hard way as they watched the Virginia Tech Hokies score 14 unanswered fourth quarter points en route to a 21-14 victory.  A 48 yard TD strike from QB Jake Rudock to WR Kevonte Manley Martin early in the second quarter gave the Hawkeyes a 14-7 lead.  Both teams would put on a defensive show for the next quarter and a half as that remained the score with 3 minutes left in the game when Logan Thomas tied it up with a 5 yard scoring toss to WR DJ Coles.  Still unable to get anything going on offense the Hawkeyes were forced to punt and the Hokies quickly capitalized with a 74 yard TD pass to TE Ryan Malleck.  The Hokies defense made that score stick as they went on to the 21-14 win.  Iowa falls to 3-1 as they get set to open B1G play next week on the road at Minnesota.

Hawkeyes Capture The Floyd of Rosedale Trophy

The Hawkeye Report NCAAFB13-Floyd-Rosedale-Trophy

Last week the Hawkeyes suffered their first defeat after falling apart in the fourth quarter.  Coach Steel Pitt made sure the loss didn't linger with his troops as they jumped on Minnesota from the outset and dominated on their way to winning their first conference matchup of the season.  Not only did they get their first conference win but they'll be taking home with them the Floyd of Rosedale Trophy given annually to the winner of the Iowa-Minnesota game.  The defense smothered the Gophers forcing 3 turnovers while Jake Rudock had a bounce back game completing 13 of 17 passes for 247 yards and 2TD while also rushing for 2 scores.  There won't be much time to bask in this victory as they head home for homecoming when the Spartans of Michigan State will come visiting Iowa City.

The Hawkeye Report Hawkeye-report

We are a little more than a third of the way through the 2013 campaign and the Hawkeyes find themselves ranked in the Top 20 with a record of 4-1 (1-0 in B1G Conference).  Coming off a dismal 2012 season things are much more pleasant in Iowa City and the smiles have returned to the Hawkeye faithful.

The Hawkeye Report 95593734.jpg.7848_crop_340x234
The smile are back on the faces of fans in Iowa City

However, the one person on the Iowa campus not smiling is Head Coach Steel Pitt.  We caught up with Coach Steel Pitt on Sunday after the team's big win over Minnesota in the B1G opener for both teams.

Hawkeye Report (HR): Coach, first off congrats on the win.  You have to be happy with the start this team is having.

Coach Steel Pitt (SP): Thanks for having me.  As a team we're happy for all wins especially when they are conference games.  This was a big game for us in many ways.  We suffered a gut wrenching defeat to Virginia Tech a week ago and after last years failures it was important to see how this group of men would react.  Would they let the lost linger or would they be able to refocus on the task at hand, that being Minnesota.  I was happy that they answered the bell.

HR:  For a guy that is happy you have a hard way of showing it.  Your demeanor would indicate that you were upset or at least not completely thrilled with the 4-1 start.

ST:  Like I said, we are happy with all victories but you also have to look at the big picture.  We have not looked overly impressive in our wins.  We understand that we have a young QB at the helm but we have to get more consistent play from that position and we have to cut down on the turnovers as we head into the gauntlet that is the B1G Conference schedule.  We were hoping to lean on the running game in the meantime but the ground attack has sputtered averaging just 119 yards per game (#93 in the country).  Defensively we are only a middle of the pack pass defense team giving up 186 yards per game (#65 in the country).  In other words, we have a number of areas where we have to improve upon if we want to achieve our ultimate goal which is a B1G Championship.  Right now we are not a championship caliber team so we have to get it together.

Happy Homecoming For The Hawkeyes

The Hawkeye Report Esq-iowa-fans-110811-xlg

Homecoming 2013 was a success in Iowa City.  The Hawkeyes welcomed the Michigan State Spartans to Kinnick Stadium and pleased the rowdy crowd of 70,000+ with a 31-18 victory.  Michigan State received the opening kick and drove all the way down the field with a well balanced offensive attack and capped the scoring drive with a 1 yard TD run by RB Nick Bell.  The Hawkeyes, however, would respond in a big way as they scored the game's next 21 points in large part to the right arm of QB Jake Rudock.  Rudock has been up and down all year and there were rumors that he may be benched this week.  Well, if his job was in jeopardy going into the game it certainly isn't coming out of the game.  Rudock tossed 3 first half TD's and finished the game a near perfect 14/15 for 247 Yards and 3TD.  Michigan State would cut the lead to 10 in the fourth quarter following Nick Hill's second TD run but they would not get any further.  Iowa moved the chains enough to eat up the clock and essentially end the game with a 25 yard FG with 33 seconds remaining.  The loss drops Michigan State to 0-1 in conference while the Hawkeyes move to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in the B1G.  They'll have a much needed week off before traveling to the Horseshoe to take on the current #1 team in the country, the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Iowa Hawkeyes Recruiting Update

It was a rough week for the Hawkeyes on the recruiting front at they lost out on dual threat QB Bobby Hale to rival Nebraska and reports are that prized DE Brad Golden may be leaning more towards the Cornhuskers as well.  All news was not bad news, however, as the Hawkeyes did land their first commitment of the recruiting season.  DE Jimmy Bailey, JUCO transfer, originally out of Illinois has decided to play for the Black and Gold next season.

The Hawkeye Report Davontelambert_crop_650

DE Jimmy Bailey

Schaumburg, IL
#132 DE by NCAA Power Recruiting

At 6'6" 240 lbs., Jimmy is lean and has the ability to put on some more weight before heading to Iowa City.  This kid loves to get to the QB and has exhibited a great burst off the line (90 ACC) as he dominated the JUCO ranks.  Bailey had another offer from Wisconsin but ultimately decided he wanted to play for Coach Steel Pitt.

Iowa Hawkeyes Recruiting Update

The Hawkeye Report 6_103841

There was no game for the Hawkeyes in Week 7 but that doesn't mean there wasn't any news to report regarding the program.  Coach Steel Pitt and his staff took advantage of the off week to put a little more time into the courtship of a couple of recruits.  Whatever the coaches had to say paid off as Iowa had two more recruits sign on the dotted line for 2014.

The Hawkeye Report Damian-prince

OT Matt Morris
6'5" 288 lbs.
Alsip, IL
#8 OT by NCAA Power Recruiting

Matt becomes the first offensive recruit to commit to Iowa and its always good when you can improve upon the trenches.  Matt is a big kid at 6'5" and a very athletic guy for 288 lbs.  However its desire to get nasty that had the offensive line coach fall in love with this kid.

The Hawkeye Report Harrington150

OLB Lavelle Larsen
6'2" 203 lbs.
Carrollton, GA
#202 OLB by NCAA Power Recruiting

Larsen is an underrated prospect who di not receive a lot of attention in high school so he chose to go the JUCO route to improve on his skills for two years.  At 6'2" 203 lbs., Lavelle is guy that will utilize his speed to get around blocks as well as to excel in pass coverage.

#11 Iowa Upsets #1 Ohio State 20-17

The Hawkeye Report Iowa_at_OSU

In what was a highly anticipated matchup of #11 Iowa vs #1 Ohio State, the Hawkeyes went into Columbus and pulled off the upset as they knocked the Buckeyes from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 20-17 victory.  It was homecoming for the students at Ohio State but unfortunately they would not return to their dorms very happy after this game ended.

Both teams came into this game wanting to establish the run against opposing defenses that rank in the top 5 in the country at stopping he run (Iowa #2 in rush defense and Ohio State #4 in rush defense).  The crowd was roaring and that obviously shook up the sophomore Iowa QB as he threw two picks on successive passes on the Hawkeyes first two drives.  Both defense came to play though as the first quarter ended in a scoreless tie.  The Buckeyes struck first as the second quarter began when QB Braxton Miller hooked up with WR Corey Brown who turned a 5 yard curl into a 64 yard scoring strike.

The Hawkeye Report 11510273-large
Brown finished with 6 catches for 196 yards and 2TD

Iowa tied the game on a Damn Bullock TD reception but Ohio State would take the lead into the half on a FG with just 8 seconds on the clock.

The Iowa defense would keep them in the game as they were able to shut down the Ohio State run game which they rely heavily on.  The Hawkeyes held the Buckeyes to 10 yards on 16 rushes.  With the defense stepping up, QB Jake Rudock began to settle in and he was helped by a Hawkeyes running game that found holes against this tough Buckeyes defense running for 133 yards on 30 carries as a team.

Midway through the fourth quarter the Hawkeyes found themselves with first and goal from the Ohio State 3 yard line.  The Buckeyes defense tightened up and would stuff the Iowa QB on a 3rd down sneak from the 1 forcing the Hawkeyes to opt for 3 and a 17-10 lead.  The combination of Miller to Brown would strike again on the very first play of the next drive as the two hooked up for a 75 yard TD catch and run to tie the game.  Rudock, though, was cool and collected as he showed true grit leading the Hawkeyes down the field as they would kick the game winning FG as time expired for a 20-17 upset win over #1 Ohio State.

No Hangover Effect

The Hawkeye Report 8220238

The Iowa Hawkeyes, coming off a huge road victory over the #1 team in the country, returned home to Iowa City and did not experience any hangover effects. The Hawkeyes defense smothered the Wildcats early while the offense was clicking as Iowa raced out to a 24-0 lead and never looked back. The Hawkeyes led 31-8 at the half and cruised to a 38-17 victory behind QB Jake Rudock's 246 Yards passing and 2TD, RB Damon Bullock's 164 yards rushing and 3TD as well as TE CJ Fiedorowicz's 133 yards receiving and 1 TD. The big story was the injury suffered by RB Damon Bullock late in the fourth as the Hawkeyes wre just trying to run the ball and eat up the remaining seconds on the clock. The team is calling the injury a back strain and they expect Bullock to miss the next two games.

FINAL SCORE

Northwestern Wildcats 17

The Hawkeye Report has learned that Coach Steel Pitt has named redshirt freshmen Mike Malloy as the team's starting RB for this week's game vs Wisconsin.

The Hawkeye Report Malloy-284x225
Malloy has impressed coaches with his quick burst.

The conventional wisdom was that RB Mark Weismann would get the chance to start in the wake of Damon Bullock's back injury. However, Malloy has quietly had a good Spring and has shown steady improvement all Fall. Coach Steel Pitt would not too deep into specifics but indicated that the coaching staff has full confidence in Mike and beleve he has earned this opportunity. Coach Steel Pitt also noted that despite the fact that Weismann will not be the starter, he should still expect to get carries in this game.

Iowa Hawkeyes Recruiting Update

The Hawkeye Report 6_103841

The good news on the recruiting trail kept coming in as the Hawkeyes got a hard commitment from one of the gems on their recruiting board.  Four star Athlete Jason Wade from Cedar Hills, OR signed on the dotted line over the weekend.

The Hawkeye Report 89679-330-0

ATH Jason Wade
6'0" 202 lbs.
Cedar Hills, OR
#34 ATH by NCAA Power Recruiting

Wade is a two way player that excelled as a dual threat QB on offense and a shutdown CB on defense.  The Hawkeyes will have a difficult decision to make as they could use help in the secondary, but Wade's talents a dual threat QB could be too tempting.

Iowa Blanks Wisconsin For Heartland Trophy

According to the forecast it was supposed to be a cold day in Iowa City but the only thing cold was the visiting Wisconsin Badgers offense.  The Badgers came into this game tied atop the Leaders Division with Ohio State and Penn State (all with 1 loss) but they'll be looking up at the competition after this.  The Hawkeyes defense stifled the Badgers offense holding them to just 174 yards of total offense and keeping them off the scoreboard.  The Badgers moved the ball well in the first half but came up short on 3 FG's and never threatened again.  The Hawkeyes, meanwhile, were extremely efficient on offense behind Jake Rudock's 162 yards passing day and 2TD.  Redshirt Freshmen RB Mike Malloy, making his first career start, rushed 22 times for 102 yards to pace the Iowa ground attack.  The Hawkeyes will travel to Purdue next week to face the Boilermakers.

Iowa Survives Scare
Hawkeyes sneak past Boilermakers thanks to Rudock's 6 TD's

The Hawkeye Report Nca14p13
QB Jake Rudock threw for 3 TD and rushed for 3 TD

The Purdue Boilermakers came into the game vs Iowa without a conference win to its name, however they have been known in the past to be a difficult out.  Today was no different as the Boilermakers gave the Hawkeyes everything they could handle before eventually bowing out 42-34.

The first quarter saw the Boilermakers jump out to a 10-0 lead as the Hawkeyes had trouble keeping possession of the ball.  Sophomore QB Jake Rudock threw two first quarter picks and it looked like it could be one of those days.  Luckily the defense was stout forcing a FG on one drive and another that resulted in a missed FG or the damage could have been much worse than 10-0.  As the second quarter progressed the defense got better and Rudock began throwing to his own players as the Hawkeyes took a 14-0 lead into the break.

Coming out of the locker room this had all the makings of a Hawkeyes blowout but if that's what you had in mind those thoughts were all changed on the first possession as Purdue FS Taylor Richards picked off a Rudock pass and returned it 27 yards for the go ahead score.

The Hawkeye Report Iowa-p10

The two teams traded scores for the entire third quarter as Iowa even went to their no huddle attack which produced incredible results for them.  The turning point in the game came with about five minutes remaining.  After trading scores for an entire quarter, the Boilermakers got the ball down 35-31 but the Iowa defense came up with a huge three and out and forced Purdue to punt.  Iowa promptly came right down the field and capped off another drive with a 31 yard TD run by Rudock.  Purdue would get a FG to cut the lead to 8 but Iowa's running game ate up the clock as the Hawkeyes held on for a 42-34 victory.

Iowa Hawkeyes Football
Senior Day Approaches

The Hawkeye Report Big10iowa-football

Week 12 brought a bye week to the Iowa Hawkeyes football team.  The team finds itself at 9-1 (6-0 in B1G Conference) and sitting at #5 in the latest BCS polls.  Even if this team lost the rest of its game it would be a big improvement over last season's 4-8 disaster of a season.  Maybe nobody has appreciated and enjoyed this year more than the seniors that fill this lineup.  They suffered through a tough season and had to come into their senior year adjusting to a new coach.  However, they dedicated themselves and that hard work has paid off well through 10 games.  In Week 13, these seniors will play their last game at Kinnick Field in front of family, friends and classmates when they host the Michigan Wolverines on Senior Day.  Looking for a way to inspire the team, coach Steel Pitt drew inspiration from ESPN personality Mike Greenberg's trip to Northwestern where he was honored by being named honorary team captain earlier this season.  Coach Steel Pitt checked the alumni records and invited Iowa alum Gene Wilder to be the honorary captain for the game.

The Hawkeye Report 07_10
Many remember Gene Wilder for having played Willy Wonka

Gene Wilder was more than happy to accept the honor and showed up on campus dressed in his legendary Willy Wonka outfit.  His message was that of anything is possible if you can imagine it.  Coach Steel Pitt asked Mr. Wilder to say a few words to the team as a method of motivation and inspiration.  Little did he know the emotions he would envoke.  Mr. Wilder, speaking to the team on the 50 yard line of Kinnick Field began by talking about how this has been a dream season made possible by everyone's belief in each other, belief in the coaching staff and belief in themselves.  As he made his way towards the tunnel, the team followed and listened intently as he continued speaking.  As the whole team had gathered underneath the stadium tunnel, the message got dark from Mr. Wilder:

There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction they are going ...
There's no knowing where they're rowing...
Or which way the river's flowing ...
Is it raining, is it snowing?
Is a hurricane a-blowing?

The team stared, fist clinched, teeth grinding as they stared and listened intently to Mr. Wilder.  Gene Wilder's voice got deeper as he spoke faster and the tone got darker:

Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing ...
Are the fires of Hell a-glowing?
Is the grisly Reaper mowing?
Yes! The danger must be growing
'Cause the rowers keep on rowing

At this point Gene Wilder was screaming and the team was part scared, part furious but completely intense:

And they're certainly not showing
Any sign that they are slowing!

Finally he belted out a great scream and said at the top of his lungs Go Hawkeyes !!!  The 70+ men in that tunnel screamed back, pounding on the walls, butting heads and more.  The scene was that of total chaos.  All I can say is pray for the Wolverines because there was evil intentions in the eyes of the Hawkeyes players in that tunnel.

Here is a look at the speech given by Gene Wilder which was filmed by one of the staff members.

Hawkeyes Send Seniors and Fans Home Happy

The Hawkeye Report 106379484_crop_650x440

It was the last home game of the season meaning this would be the last time the seniors played on Kinnick Field.  The Hawkeyes were fired up and the offense put on a show as they rolled up 234 yards on the ground while Jake Rudock threw for 301 yards en route to putting up 41 points on the Wolverines defense.  However, as good as the offense was, the defense was equally as bad surrendering 230 yards on the ground and 426 total yards of offense to the Wolverines.  Luckily for the Hawkeye faithful they were able to hold the Wolverines to just 38 points, hahaha.  Michigan was forced into a three and out on their first possession and little did anyone know that it would be the only punt of the game.  In fact that would be the only time a possession did not end in a score with the exception of Michigan's desperation heave at the end of the first half.  Michigan's RB Fitzgerald Toussaint ran in a TD from 2 yards out for Michigan with just 1:04 on the clock to tie the game, but nobody in the stadium had any thoughts of overtime the way this game was going.  Sophomore QB Jake Rudock led the team right down the field, aided by a 36 yards run down the sideline by Mike Malloy, as the Hawkeyes kicked the game winning FG as the clock expired.  The Hawkeyes move to 10-1 on the season and remain undefeated in conference play heading into next week's epic showdown with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.  The winner of that game will decide who goes to the B1G Championship game as well as bragging rights in this border rivalry.

IowaNebraska overcomes a sloppy start, rolls in 2nd HalfNebraska
The Hawkeye Report NCA14PS3_52_GR_JPEG_SCREENSHOT_mbk
"JEEZUS EFFING CHRIST!" The words echoed through Memorial Stadium as the Husker faithful sat silent, watching Nebraska's title hopes fall away with each Jake Rudock TD in the 2nd quarter.  After Corey Cooper failed to make any attempt at tackling the ball carrier, Coach Jeanneret singled out the defensive leader yelling at him to, "tackle these bastards like those whores you get locked up for backhanding late at night." The young Husker coach had never been seen swearing, stomping, and spitting like this, and made former coach, Bo Pelini look tame in comparison. After an official shouted to step back or face a sideline infraction or ejection, the Huskers were flagged for a phantom clipping call 50 yards away from the ball on the next play near the opposite sideline of a big pass that may have set up a late field goal to draw closer. Instead, Nebraska limped into the locker room down 21-10, and Iowa got the ball to start the 2nd half.
The Hawkeye Report Tumblr_lwovcqyYJc1r8ifvxo1_500
I don't look so bad now, do I?
The second half was a different monster all together. Coach Jeanneret's neck vain was noticeably less flared out. And the defense was able to make a few big plays. Iowa opened with the ball, but had to punt it. And in a span of 33 seconds, Nebraska was on top 24-21. Nebraska seemingly abandoned its run game.  Jamal Turner hauled in a 24 yard TD pass from Martinez catching the Safety in no-man's-land between Kenny Bell on the outside, and Turner inside. Then, on the ensuing drive, Sophomore transfer Jonathan Rose baited Jake Rudock into a bad throw as Nebraska called a zone blitz. Rose jumped the route and raced off to the end zone.  Iowa would fail to find the end zone in the second half, and Nebraska would extend the lead in the 4th quarter.

Also, David Santos made a ridiculous interception on a swatted ball to seal the game. Had Iowa decided to try, they could have challenged the ruling as the ball appeared it may have touched the turf before Santos secured the ball. Martinez was shut down on the ground on the day, but amassed 366 yards passing taking advantage of the stacked box.

FINAL SCORE
Iowa 24
Nebraska 34
Nebraska heads to Indianapolis. Can they cap the undefeated regular season with a conference championship or more?  After the game, reporters asked Coach Jeanneret about his comments to Corey Cooper. The questions were glanced off with the coach stating that emotions were running high on the field, and that the example used in that altercation was merely a misunderstanding. Cooper had just been playing Wii Tennis in the dorms, and his backhand connected in more ways than one. That's why they make wrist straps though, and he was taught to wrap it up. It got his attention though didn't it?

Iowa Hawkeyes Win The Rose Bowl
While Coach Steel Pitt spoke about winning a National Championship in Iowa City, those dreams were dash with a bitter defeat to eventual National Champions Nebraska.  However, that doesn't mean that this season wasn't a success by any means.  The 2012 Hawkeyes suffered through a dismal 4-8 season and the future looked bleak.  The 2013 Hawkeyes brought excitement back to Iowa City and a winning attitude as Iowa finishes their season 11-2 and winners of the Rose Bowl thanks to a 24-21 victory over Oregon.  Starting QB Jake Rudock left the game early due to a broken collarbone and his backup tried to give the game away with 3 picks (including one returned for a TD), but the running game which accounted for 145 yards, a defense that held Oregon under 300 total yards and a kickoff returned for a TD by WR Powell helped Iowa pull out the victory.
