I'll be giving all team news, transactions and updates through this topic.

9/21/12 With the departure of Sean Peyton (and Bountygate for that matter), a new regime comes marching in.
While the offensive playbook will remained relatively unchanged heading into the new regime, the defense will begin a slow transition throughout the season into a 3-4 look, utilizing the potential of LBs Lofton, Hawthorne, Ruud, Vilma and the serviceable Scott Shanle and Chris Chamberlain.

Will Herring LOLB, was released earlier today. High cap implications and no expectations for any real playing time lead to his release.

The Saints will be heading into the season hoping to put the bounty scandal behind them and improve a defense that has ranked at the bottom of the league annually for the last decade.

Breaking News: The New Orleans Saints have come to terms with FA WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh

The deal will be worth about $910k. The deal was believed to be made to shore up the WR corps that is now missing Robert Meachem. T.J. will offer a sure handed option over the middle. The Saints have also signed CB - Phillip Buchanon. Buchanon will likely give the Saints depth at corner, especially on nickel situations and possibly in the return game to spell Sproles at key moments.

The Saints have also released DT - Tom Johnson and RB - Travaris Cadet.

WEEK 1 Redskins @ Saints

1 2 3 4
Redskins 0 13 17 7
Saints 7 0 0 7

Key Players:
Drew Brees 23/33 324 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs,
Jimmy Graham 7 Rec, 119 yards
Malcolm Jenkins 2 Tak, 1 INT

Drew Brees threw for 300+ (Most of which however came in the 4th quarter), Jimmy Graham had a decent game with 7 catches for 119 yards and the Saints held the Redskins to under 290 total yards, but still lost by double digits.

The Redskins got plenty of big plays, including a Punt return TD by Brandon Banks, and a 30 yard run by Griffin. While close for a majority of the game, turnovers at the most inopportune times killed any momentum and stalled 3 separate drives for the Saints. An INT in the endzone, a fumble at midfield by Graham, and another TD near the 5 doomed New Orleans.

Each time the Saints seemed poised to get back on the scoreboard, a costly turnover sent the momentum in the other direction. Brandon Banks sparked the Redskins with two long punt returns, and big play after big play eventually sunk the Saints.

Barrett Ruud broke his collarbone on a tackle in the 3rd quarter, and is going to miss 7 weeks. That puts a damper on an already injured LB corps. Vilma MLB, is out 6 weeks with a partial MCL Tear and David Hawthorne ROLB, is out with a Shoulder Tear.

In related news, Saints signed ROLB Cameron Sheffield and MLB Demorrio Williams for depth at the depleted spot.

Following a flurry of moves and shake-ups to the roster, the New Orleans Saints head to Carolina hoping to avoid an 0-2 start.

Key upgrades at SS and at ROLB have the Saints hoping on an improved defensive effort.

Daryl Smith, a great run stopping LB, has been added to an injured LB corps and hopes to steady a unit that has long been a weakness for much of the decade. Smith was acquired from Jacksonville for a 1st round draft pick in 2013, Patrick Robinson and backup DE Martez Wilson. The Saints also acquired a 2nd round pick in the trade. Daryl Smith has goals to make his first pro bowl appearance, and says he has set the bar high for this Saints defense.

Adrian Wilson, pro-bowl safety formerly of the Arizona Cardinals, was acquired with a swap of Roman Harper and a 2nd round draft choice. Wilson, an 11 year vet, instantly improves a slower secondary. Joining him in the defensive backfield is Antione Cason, CB acquired from San Diego. Cason slides into the number 2 role, and has high hopes for this season. A pro bowl season from any of these acquisitions will be a welcomed addition to a team not known for its defense.

The GM has said however, that he isn't done making moves. The defense is already very different than its opening day roster, and could still start a few more new names.

The Saints also came to terms with the release of MLB Demorrio Williams, and signed FA's CB Cassius Vaughn, SS M.D. Jennings, WR Keshawn Martin and QB Seneca Wallace.

WEEK 2 Saints @ Panthers

Saints 31 - Panthers 21

1 2 3 4
Saints 0 14 10 7
Panthers 0 14 7 0

Key Players:
Drew Brees 14/21 253 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT,
Darren Sproles 7 rushes, 170 yards, 2 TDs ; 3 Rec, 36 yards
Adrian Wilson 8 Tak, 2 FF
Daryl Smith 3 Tak, 1 sack

Darren Sproles had the game of a lifetime, running for 170 yards on only 7 carries, giving the Saints their first victory of the season. Sproles had a rough opening quarter, going 3 rushes for -2 yards and a catch for no gain. Early into the second quarter following a DeAngelo Williams TD, Sproles fumbled the kickoff which lead to another Panthers TD and down 0-14.

Sproles then took a toss to the left 71 yards for the TD. Following a 3 sack possession where the Panthers had the ball go from the Saints 24 yard line back to midfield, the Saints took the ball from their own 2 and gave it to Sproles up the middle. 98 yards later, it was tied and Sproles had the longest rush of the season. Sproles made the safety miss and outran the LB with only :20 left on the clock.

The Saints would pull ahead after halftime, with a FG. The Panthers made a strong push, taking back the lead with a Steve Smith TD. However 4 plays later on 3rd and 15, Drew Brees found Devery Henderson for a 53 yard touchdown. Brees would add a TD to Graham in the 4th to seal the victory.

The new additions on defense made an impact as Adrian Wilson caused two key fumbles in the 4th quarter, preventing any comeback hopes the Panthers had. Daryl Smith steadied the linebacking unit and again allowed only 308 yards of total offense, many of which came in the 4th quarter. Antione Cason was also impressive in his Saints debut.

Following the victory, rumors swirled that Pierre Thomas could be on his way out the door. He had no touches on the day, those instead went to Mark Ingram who had a miserable day going 0 yards on 5 carries. Whether or not Pierre Thomas stays with the team may largely depend on Mark Ingram's ability to spell Sproles in key situations. So far, Mark Ingram has rushed for 9 yards on 9 carries all season, which is hardly impressive.

WEEK 4 Saints @ Packers

Saints 52 - Packers 21

1 2 3 4
Saints 7 28 7 10
Packers 0 7 7 7

Key Players:
Drew Brees 12/21 209 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT
Mark Ingram 13 rushes, 124 yards, 1 TD
Jimmy Graham 7 Rec, 156 yards, 1 TD
Daryl Smith 2 INTs, 86 INT yards, 2 defensive TDs

The Acquisition of Daryl Smith earlier in the season has done more than just improve a slumping Defense from last season. It has transformed the Saints defense into a top 10 defense so far into the season, with the Saints ranked number 10 in total team D, after being ranked 32nd almost all of last season. And in Lambeau, Daryl Smith proved he fits the 3-4 just fine after picking off Aaron Rodgers twice, returning both for scores.

In a game that was defensive in nature, the Saints created 6 turnovers, 5 of them being INTs. Curtis Lofton, Jabari Greer and Antoine Cason all ended up with an INT, causing havoc and stalling a formidable Packers offense. The NFL MVP was held to just 257 yards passing in addition to the 5 INTs on the day.

The new defensive pieces the Saints have brought in this season continue to have an effective impact on their season, leading hopes that the defense will remain in the top 10. Suddenly now the goal of having a top 5 defense may not look so surprising after the pathetic showing the Saints defense had in the 2011 season. Smith is looking for his first visit to Hawaii of his career, and so far it looks like it might be a possibility.

The Saints stumbled a bit on offense, however. Drew Brees struggled early, going 2/8 in the first quarter, leading to 2 consecutive 3 and outs. The run game was doing no better as Sproles struggled to find running lanes early. However, the Saints' second year man Mark Ingram had a fantastic day running the ball, starting with a strong 2nd quarter showing. Ingram had 75 yards in the 2nd quarter and added a score after a Curtis Lofton interception. He finished with 124 yards on the day.

The Saints improve to 2-2 and now have an eye of challenging for the division lead. They play San Diego next week.

Breaking News: The New Orleans Saints have traded for Pro Bowl LB Shaun Phillips

The Saints have dealt a 3rd and 4th round draft pick to the San Diego Chargers, as well as return man Keshawn Martin, in exchange for Pro Bowl ROLB Shaun Phillips. Phillips is a gifted pass rusher that is expected to help the New Orleans pass rush. Phillips will likely move over to LOLB, and play opposite Daryl Smith. With Smith and Phillips on the outside, David Hawthorne will likely move inside until Jonathan Vilma returns from injury. Whether Hawthorne or Vilma will maintain the starting role as #2 MLB in the Saints new look 3-4, is not known yet. Vilma likely has a leg up, but his age could factor in. Backup MLB Barrett Ruud could also see some time at MLB, in spots.

When asked if the acquisition of Phillips meant that Vilma could be out the door in New Orleans, the answer came back emphatically no. Now whether Phillips and the Saints come to a deal in the offseason, it could mean the end of the road for veteran Will Smith at DE or Sedrick Ellis at DT. Both will carry significant salaries, and with so much money invested at the LB spot, the Saints may choose to build through the draft. Doing so may take some nifty scouting work as the Saints no longer hold a 1st or 2nd round draft pick. They currently own a 3rd, two 4s, and a 7th.

Pierre Thomas is also a possible casualty.

WEEK 5 Chargers @ Saints

Chargers 31 - Saints 38

1 2 3 4
Chargers 0 21 3 7
Saints 7 17 0 14

Key Players:
Drew Brees 17/24 407 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT
Jimmy Graham 5 Rec, 108 yards, 3 TDs
Nick Toon 3 Rec, 111 yards, 1 TD
Adrian Wilson 1 INT, 7 Tackles

In a game where Ryan Mathews torched the Saints defense, Drew Brees Played his finest game of the season, throwing for over 400 yards and 5 TDs in a game that puts the Saints over .500 for the first time this season. Jimmy Graham continued his great year with another 100+ receiving day and adding 3 touchdowns. And in a game that saw 4 lead changes, including a 21 point comeback in the 2nd by San Diego, Brees put his final stamp on the game with an 83 yard TD pass to Nick Toon who split the Charger secondary on his way to the game sealing score.

The Saints run defense struggled late, allowing 3 runs over 20 yards and allowing a 161 yard rushing day for Ryan Mathews. Cameron Jordan was also injured early in the game, going down with a dislocated elbow that will keep him out of action for 4 weeks.

Perhaps the most pivotal play of the game came late in the 4th quarter. Down by only 7, the Chargers were driving and at the 5 yard line. After Drew Stanton took the snap, the play broke down and Stanton scrambled to the left heading for the endzone. As he dove for the score, Antoine Cason knocked the ball loose at the goalline and Malcolm Jenkins recovered it in the endzone. Two plays later, Brees would find Toon for 83 yards and the game was essentially over. On the final Charger possession, Adrian Wilson picked off Stanton and the Saints kneeled the clock out.

WEEK 2 Saints @ Buccaneers

Saints 47 - Buccaneers 21

1 2 3 4
Saints 7 21 13 6
Panthers 0 14 0 7

Key Players:
Daryl Smith 4 Tackles, 3 sacks, 1 INT returned for a TD
Cory Redding 5 Tackles, 2 sacks
Adrian Wilson 2 Tackles, 1 TFL, 2 INTs
Jonathan Vilma 6 Tackles, 2 sacks
Pierre Thomas 21 rushes, 97 yards

The New Orleans Saints defense stifled the Tampa Bay offense, holding them to only 141 total yards, winning their 3rd game in a row, improving to 4-2. The Saints had 11 sacks on the day, lead by Daryl Smith who had 3 in the first quarter. The Buccaneers made adjustments to slow down Smith, but the rest of the pass rush continually harassed Freeman and the Bucs were never able to establish a run game, accumulating just 8 yards on the ground.

Drew Brees had a uncharacteristically bad game, throwing 3 picks and only 4 completions as he went 4/12 for only 68 yards and a TD to Jimmy Graham. The 50 yard TD marked the 3rd straight game Jimmy Graham has scored in. The Saints running game faired much better, as Pierre Thomas nearly cracked the 100 yard mark and ran for nearly 5 yards a carry.

However, on a day where the defense stood tall, Daryl Smith shined brightest. In addition to his 3 sacks, he also returned an INT to the house for a score, adding to his tally this season. So far Daryl Smith has found the end zone 3 times this season. An impressive feat for a defensive player, let alone a Linebacker. Adrian Wilson continues his stellar play as well, notching 2 INTs and bolstering what is now one of the most improved defenses from beginning of the season.

Newly acquired DE Cory Redding and OLB Shaun Phillips also recorded sacks on a day where 7 different Saints got to the QB. Redding had 2 sacks and greatly helped improve the D-line in the run game, with 3 tackles for loss on the day.

Despite the impressive performance on defense, Special Teams had its worst showing yet. Newly acquired return man T.Y. Hilton fumbled twice on punt returns, both leading to Tampa Bay scores in the 2nd quarter. He redeemed himself on the first play of the 2nd half with a 105 yard kick return for a TD, but was injured later in the game. He suffered a broken collarbone and will be out 5 weeks. Mark Ingram also continued to struggle, carrying the ball once and fumbling in the 4th when Saints backups attempted to run out the clock. Pierre Thomas looks to permanently take over as backup RB for the rest of the season.

WEEK 8 Saints @ Broncos

Saints 48 - Bronco 28

1 2 3 4
Saints 14 20 14 0
Broncos 14 0 14 0

Key Players:
Daryl Smith 7 Tackles, 6 sacks, 1 FF
Jonathan Vilma 4 Tackles, 2 INTs
Drew Brees 11/21, 273 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT
Jimmy Graham 9 Rec, 173 yards, 4 TDs

Daryl Smith had a near record setting day, getting to the QB 6 times and leading the New Orleans Saints defense to one its better performances of the year with 6 takeaway on route to a big win in Denver. Drew Brees had a bounce back performance, throwing 4 TDs after throwing an early interception to Joe Mays. With the offense putting up so many points on the board, the defense held serve and kept the Broncos quiet for a majority of the game, forcing Manning to throw earlier than he wanted.

Daryl Smith, who now has 10 sacks for the season, was having the best game of his career, beating RT Orlando Franklin all game long, pressuring Manning even on plays where he didn't get the sack. 6 sacks in a single game was enough to place him tied for number two all-time for most sacks in a game. Antoine Cason picked off Payton Manning early in the second quarter and returned it for a score, marking the 4th straight game where the Saints defense has returned an INT for a TD.

Pierre Thomas had another great game on the ground, rushing for nearly 100 yards and a score. This is the second straight game where Thomas has put in work at the RB spot, and seems to have given the Saints run game a spark. Jimmy Graham continued a streak of TDs, now with his 4th straight game with at least 1 receiving TD. He had 4 alone in this game, finding holes in the Bronco defense in the red zone, and breaking a 62 yard TD early in the 3rd quarter to finish his day. Graham has 10 TDs this season, tied with Desean Jackson as top in the NFL. His 173 yard performance is also the second highest of his season, adding to his now 645 yard total for the year, on pace for a 1,400 yard season.
