As the 2012 regular season kicked off the San Diego Chargers walked off the field with a bitter taste of defeat as they fall to the Oakland Raiders 34-14. At half time the score was 14-7 as the Chargers received, but things fell apart quick.

Phillip Rivers threw for 6 picks in the game. We caught up with Rivers after the game and while not saying much he offered us with this. "I threw one pick and then I tried to make up for it and threw another, it just spiraled out of control. Was my fault for the loss. I need to be patient and do a better job managing the game".

While Rivers did have 6 Ints, he also accumulated 305 yards in the air and 2 TDs, 1 to Malcom Floyd and the other to Eddie Royal.

Oakland did an effective job controlling the clock as they controlled the ball for 5 more minutes then the Chargers, leaving that defense gassed. And you could tell as Darren McFaden put up the majority of his numbers in the 4th quarter as Carson Palmer managed the game with ease, rarely getting pressured as he ended the game without being sacked.

During the post game interview with the coach, he focused in on the inability to put drives together. "We had 0 visits to the red zone. That's not going to get it done. We moved the ball reasonably well and when we got to midfield we faltered. It's inexcusable and we'll do better next week."

This is not how he was looking to start his coaching career. San Diego has their home opener next week against the Tennessee Titans as they look to rebound.

As week 2 was approaching the Chargers made a few surprising trades that shook a few heads. Traded both long time Charger Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason. In return they got a few young Corner backs in Jerome Murphy and the speedy Chris Greenway, as well as several draft picks.

As far as week 2 went they hosted the Tennessee Titans for their home opener and while not flashy, it was a one sided affair. As the Chargers dominated the run game and controlled the clock, chewing up over 9 more minutes then the Titans, and accumulating 289 yards on the ground.

The tandem of Ryan Mathews and Edwin Baker dominated. Mathews accounted for 161 yards and 1 score while Baker raked up 125 and 3 scores. The most impressive thing about the win was they didn't attempt a single pass in the 2nd half. But, maybe there was a reason behind that as Phillip Rivers struggled in the rain, throwing 5-12 for a grand total of 77 yards and 1 int.

But, relax. Rivers isn't on the hot seat, in fact his job is perfectly safe as we spoke to the coach. "I felt comfortable with him the whole game, but I wanted to give our back up a few reps. Rivers is starting next week against the Steelers and we're going to need his A game if we hope to compete."

Defensively they held the talented, but struggling Johnson to just 32 yards on 11 carries and forced a fumble. Jack Locker didn't have a much better day as he was held to 115 yards in the air, throwing a TD, but had 2 Ints on the day.

The Chargers host the Pittsburgh Steelers in week 3 as they look to form a winning streak. Go chargers, go.

(Bit delayed, but getting caught up on it. Not doing week 3 since I had to play the computer)

As week 4 got underway the Chargers showed promise on the opening drive, running down the throat of the Kansas City Chiefs. However, the drive stalled when there was a substitution error and forced the Chargers to burn a timeout on a 3rd and short. After that timeout all they could settle for was Field Goals and a kickoff return for a TD.

Their offense was out of sorts and many fans were screaming for Rivers job, but the Chargers coach kept him in and didn't give a thought to benching the 98 million dollar quarterback. "Phillip is our guy. He's going to start next week and we're going to count on him to produce."

While they entered at the time with the #2 ranked defense, their youthful secondary showed it's lack of experience as Ryan Mallet was tossing the ball anywhere he wanted and there was nothing they could do to stop him as he threw for 5 TDs and 357 yards on the day. Meanwhile Jamaal Charles ran all over what looked like a tired defense as they let up their first 100 yard runner on the young season.

The Chargers look to bounce back strong next week as they travel to New Orleans to take on Drew Brees. As of now, Phillip Rivers is the QB.

With week 5 kicking off they started off dreadfully, quickly falling down 17-0 against the New Orleans Saints. It was at that time the coach finally decided to pull the plug on Rivers as he went 0-4 with an INT.

Drew Stanton, the former Detroit Lion was called upon as the Chargers scored 21 unanswered points, taken the lead. However that lead wouldn't hold for long as it went back and forth after that until Stanton fumbled the ball on the 1 yard line going in for the score with a minute to go.

Ryan Mathews had a stellar game going for 160 yards on the ground.

As we asked the coach about the quarterback situation next week, he responded. "Drew will get the start. I want to see what he offers before the bye and then we'll make the adjustments we need. Phillip is under contract for 3 more years and I need to figure out a way to incorporate him into our offense"

The Chargers host the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football, were so far they're 0-2 on prime time.

Chargers 34 Browns 10

Is Drew Stanton really the answer? The journeymen quarterback that was 3rd string his entire career in Detroit? While time will fully answer this question, but for now, that question is a resounding yes as he is 2-0 as a starter and almost lead an improbable comeback versus the red hot Saints.

While going 7-10 on the air for 90 yards and picking up 25 yards on the ground isn't anything to wow you, he was efficient with the ball. More importantly this is the first game the Chargers haven't committed a turnover. However I suppose the real question everyone wants to know is whats the plan with the 100 million dollar quarterback Phillip Rivers. We asked the coach. "Right now, nothing. He's a member of this team and he will be for the remainder of the season. He is a professional and if we need to rely on him in the future he'll step up." Rivers was listed on the teams official depth chart as the 3rd string quarterback. He offered us no word after the game.

Now, lets get realistic here. Next week on yet another prime time game the Chargers play the unbeaten Chiefs, who gave them a beat down in their first meeting. Will a new quarterback give them a new result?

Chiefs 37 Chargers 24

The score would indicate a close game, however the play on the field would indicate an one sided affair as the Chargers got shut down offensively. They had to rely on a special teams and a defense touchdown. The only bright spot offensively was Ryan Mathews going over 100 yards yet again. Drew Stanton struggled mightily and rumors are swirling that hot headed quarterback Phillip Rivers could return to the field next week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"Right now we need to reevaluate our QB position. It's not pretty and we can't rely on our run game to be our entire offense. Defensively we need to start getting some pressure on the QB. We can't win if he can just sit back there and pick us apart."

It remains to be seen what will happen against the Bucs, but reports showed Philip Rivers working out with the first team offense for the first time in weeks. We'll keep you up to date with the latest news regarding the QB battle.

Tune in next week as the Chargers host the Buccaneers as they travel across the country.

Chargers 24 Tampa Bay 23

In a controversial ending as at first glance it looked like the Buccaneers were rewarded with their win or go home mentality. With only 30 seconds left Josh Freeman hooked up for a touchdown to bring the score within 1. Instead of kicking the extra point the Bucs decided they were going for the win. As Josh Freeman stepped back the Chargers brought pressure, forcing Freeman to throw early. The throw was off target and required the receiver to come back for the pass. At first glance he caught it in the end zone, but no signal, so the play goes on. As he comes out of the end zone he turns and tries to get back in and gets stuffed on the 1 inch yard. The Chargers recover the ensuing onside kick and run out the clock.

Phillip Rivers got the nod to start this game after being benched for the previous 3 and was very effective throwing for 239 yards, 1 TD and 0 INT. Mathews contributed on the ground picking up 94 yards and a score and Meachem showed up hauling in over 100 yards including a long touch down. The defense recorded 5 sacks and 3 INTs, including a pick 6 by the ex Detroit Lion Jonte Green with 2 minutes remaining giving them a 24-17 lead.

A win is a win and the Chargers will certainly take it. "Absolutely." The coach responded when asked if he's happy with their performance. "We have things to work on, but as a whole in all 3 phases we played well. We came up with turnovers and we didn't give them the ball. Combine that with a win and I'll take that any day of the week."

The Chargers take on the Broncos next week. They bring their record to 5-4 in the always tough AFC West.
